May 20, 201610 yr Congratulations! I can only hope that when she returns to Thailand as a hero, that she tries to help overturn the decision to close climbing on Phi Phi. "I can only hope that when she returns . . . a hero. . . " No, no, no. The English term hero means a man. The female equivalent - despite anything the loony left feminists and their fawning male minions may say to the contrary - is heroine. By the same token, a woman bus or orchestra conductor is a conductress and a female actor is an actress. The traditional female forms of common nouns have nothing to do with discrimination against women. Their function is to clarify the gender of the subject noun referred to. Applying the same word for both sexes can easily cause confusion where none previously existed. You don't believe me? Then perhaps we should ask the daughter of our reigning monarch - not exactly my idea of a downtrodden woman labouring under the patriarchal yoke - whether she would be happy to be known henceforth as Prince Anne. I imagine her brother might have something to say about that - or the alternative solution (which I have no doubt the feminists would actually prefer) that he be reassigned as Princess Charles. Enough of this nonsense. It is time to turn back the creeping tide of political correctness which poses an increasing threat not only to our language - the world's lingua franca - but to our entire culture. Who appointed you grammar policeperson? ;-)
May 20, 201610 yr I only hope the Thais are not the next people to land on the moon or the first to land on Mars, otherwise it`s going to mean I or my descendants will need visas to visit those places in the future. WOW... It never ceases to amaze me... Someone does something so outstanding while others lack the capacity to see or write anything other than pure negativity... does your country laud everyone who climbs a mountain? you pay your 60k and you are guided up along with several others in your 'tour group' what's the big deal? never cease to amaze me that anything half decent a Thai does get's blown out of all proportion and posters like you prance along to defend them
May 20, 201610 yr Well done to her and the other 500 Everest climbers this year. Are 500 climbers expected to ascend Everest this year? That's a lot, especially as the window to ascend is only this short period before the monsoons, presumably there's a backlog following the earthquake 2 years ago.

Sure there are teams to help you up and down but an awful lot of people still fail to conquer it and many die in the attempt. And Thais don't have a history of ascending peaks. too hot in Thailand. May 21, 201610 yr With all this talk about heroes, maybe you might think it's an appropriate title for the female climber in the following link: http://ab.co/1Twp2DG
May 21, 201610 yr Congratulations Ms Napasdaporn. A work colleague of mine did this climb about 12 years ago. He trained hard every day for more than a year, prior to completing the climb, which ended up with him losing two fingers and a toe to frost bite.
May 22, 201610 yr I'm curious if anyone has any other good links to this story. I did a search and haven't found anything on other well-known news sources. The guardian site which has a page for Everest has nothing listed http://www.theguardian.com/world/everest There might have a webpage with a log of climbers somewhere online but can't seem to find it. Also I wonder if safely coming down is part of the requirement of actually succeeding in the climb?

I assume she already summited, but the use of present tense could be confusing....if she did, good on her. Very dangerous and exhausting.
May 22, 201610 yr And in doing so, she became only the 32,124th person to do so, only the 541st woman to do so and only the 132rd dentist to do so. Headline stuff indeed, always assuming you're a Thai and desperate for proof that you're just as good as everybody else. Gawd, this cultural cringe they've got gets really tedious sometimes. Winnie Have you got the figures for hairdressers completing the climb? Tragically disharmony irretrievably destroyed the chances of the team below.

Winnie 3 people have already died this climbing season. Yes, it's not what it once was but Everest is still dangerous and climbing it is a major achievement.

Winnie According to facts only about 4050 people have scaled the summit. 250 people have died trying. You're qouting attempts so more accurately she did better than 28 000 rich and fit people who couldn't complete a relatively easy feat (according to Daveinasia)
May 22, 201610 yr Well done. Any photos of her on the summit? The photos posted are of Everest Base Camp.
