Monks discover big drugs haul in temple after nighttime shootout

BANGKOK: -- Monks preparing for their Sunday morning rounds found a suspicious bag left in a flowerpot during the night. Inside was 12 million baht worth of drugs.

Bukkhalo, Thonburi, police were called to the Sutthawat temple in Soi Somdej Prajao Taksin 24, at 5am and confirmed the black bin bag contained 40,000 Ya Ba tablets and two kilos of ice amphetamine reported Thairath.

Some 200 metres away they found an abandoned pick up with its doors open and six cartridge casings scattered about.

Tanawit Yukkrairik, 22, a local told police that around 1.30 am he had heard six shots ring out and seen two men on a motorcycle race off. Two other men were also seen running into the temple and out the other side.

Police examined the Ford Ranger truck and saw that it had red mud and dead insects on it. They believe it was used to transport the drugs from the north for sale in Bangkok. The shooting was probably done by the man on the back of the motorcycle as the handover was taking place and a disagreement ensued.

Monks found the drugs as they were about to go on their alms rounds and alerted police.

The original amount was probably 80,000 Ya Ba tablets and four kilos of ice. This should lead to a rash of calls to the pimps, new smart phones, iPads and computers at the temple.
