Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifies Deputy PM's interview about IUU fishing

BANGKOK, 24 May 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifies an interview given by Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan on the IUU fishing, saying he stated that the EU did not reach any decision whether to give a red card or a green card to Thailand.

The ministry on Monday issued an announcement to clarify the matter following the news reports of the deputy PM’s interview that “Thailand will not be given a red card, and will definitely get the green.” The ministry added that Thailand still has time to work on this matter before such a decision will be made, and Thailand reaffirms its commitment to continue working to tackle the problem.

In the announcement, the ministry stressed that the Thai government attaches great importance to combatting IUU fishing and has been taking serious and strenuous measures on this matter. Most recently, Thailand has acceded to the FAO Port State Measure Agreement (PSMA), which is an international agreement focused on eradicating IUU fishing.

The EU has never prescribed Thailand on what measures to implement, but closely exchanged knowledge and experience to deal with the problem. It is the decision of the Thai agencies to adapt the EU's recommendations to suit Thailand's context and the situation on the ground, said the ministry.

In a newspaper we not allowed to talk about, has Gen Prawit told there was Good news, "We won't get the red card... They have delayed this because we have always cooperated." And gets 6 months more on the yellow card.

And then The EU in Thailand declined to comment, citing the confidential nature of meeting.

Do they really know what they was told and discussed on the meeting ;)

Another example of how the Thai govt happily issues statements etc on behalf of others and seem to get away with it.

They really need to be called out publicly more often, why play nice diplomatic games when they don't ?

Yes claims about F1 and the Tour de France coming here were quickly denied by the relevant organisations but making press releases on behalf of other governments is in a different league.

Well, they don't want to jeopardize their extra incomes by complaining, do they?

Bernie will always quite happily tell people to < deleted > off, he doesn't need the money, plus he can usually bend people to do what he wants them to do anyway.

and 24 hours before :)

Foreign Ministry yesterday said the European Union did not reach any decision on the red card or yellow card during its latest dialogue with Thailand over illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Who can we believe wink.png
