Forestry Dept reclaims 5,000 rai of encroached forest land in Nan

NAN, 24 May 2016 (NNT) - Forestry Department director general Chollathit Surassavadee said a combined force of forestry officials, police and the 32nd Rangers Regiment had reclaimed 5,000 rai of encroached forest land in Wiangsa district of Nan province.

They found a number of permanent structures built on three rai of forest land which will be demolished after the reclamation, the department head said.

He said all alleged forest encroachers, particularly those who have paid for such illegal practice, will be prosecuted by law while a solution to the problem will involve a long-term and integrated process. He called on all Thais to lend a hand in conserving the forests for future generations.

A lot of people have criticized the army for the coup....

One has to give credit to the army for re-claiming-back land stolen by Thais who do not care about preserving the forest for future generations

They are only looking to make money for nothing...

With the army trying to stop corruption the best way it can, one cannot fail to see that the Taksin Clique, never, never did anything about

encroachment on national forests.. Corruption starts from the top of the chain..

Absolute nonsense, retired and active generals and admirals are a major group of land encroachers.

Take as an example the leader of the 2006 coup; (source Wikipedia)

He was only forced to give back land AFTER the actions of the Red Shirts!

Surayud was accused of breaching the Forestry Act and the National Forest Reserves Act by illegally owning forest reserve land in Yaithiang Mountain of Nakhon Ratchasimaprovince. When Surayud was Commander of the 2nd Army Region, he was sold the plot of land for 50,000 baht. He later transferred ownership of the plot to his wife. Surayud vowed to resign and return the land (which he did not deny owning) if found guilty.[19] He was defended by Interior Minister Aree Wongarya, who claimed, "Gen Surayud purchased the land from someone else so the question has to be posed to the first owner whether the land is reserved."

National Human Rights Commissioner and Thaksin sympathizer Jaran Ditthapichai noted, "I cannot agree to have someone call himself a man of morality and sufficiency if he built a fancy house in a forest reserve."[190]

However, the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) refused to investigate the land encroachment charges, claiming that the statute of limitations on the case had run out. NCCC member Klanarong Chantik noted that Surayud retired from military service in 2003 whereas the charges were made 4 years after his retirement, and that the NCCC could not legally investigate an officer for alleged wrongdoing beyond two years after retirement.[191]

In February 2010 after demonstrations by the "Red Shirts" at Khao Yaithiang Mountain, Surayud returned the land to the Royal Forestry Department, without any removals of structures or plants, weeks before a formal notice from the department was issued. The plot of land is now under the care of the Royal Forestry Department after Surayud moved out. However, up until now no legal action has been taken by Thai authorities against Surayud or other landowners of similar type all over Thailand.

Hope "tagalong" will have the decency to reply to this reaction and admit he was mistaken. But I am afraid that will not happen. The general reaction would be "but it was worse under Taksin" without any proof.

What "tagalong" should have done in the first place is comparing land encroachment figures over time to see if there is a trend that can be correlated to which government is in charge. Instead he choose the easy way and reverted to populist propaganda that supports his general view that the current government is better than the previous government. Unfortunately for him his statement was easily proven wrong with facts by another poster.

Actually just looking at the number of cases you guys are wrong. This government is doing far more about land encroachment. But real numbers would be nice. But if you followed the news there were many topics about this in the past when the current government came to power.

number of cases is not a guide as ex-military personnel are immune from prosecution over abuse of power by and large. Number of rai owned inside protected areas would be the statistic to look at, but of course it is not compiled and never will be for obvious reasons. However if you spend years around the National Parks you will get to know General *** owns this and Admiral *** owns that bit.

The traditional response by the Parks department has been to re-draw boundaries to exclude these encroached areas if the person is influential enough.

Number of cases tells little to nothing.

Maybe the current government is going after the small fish while handing huge pieces of national forrest to their buddies. The total amount of encroached land increases in that case while the number of cases also increases.

Dont fall for the propaganda without asking questions, also not when it comfirms your bias.

Does anyone know who the rich families are that were given government land on Phuket by the then agricultural minister SUTHEP. This land was supposed to be given to poor Thai farmers for agricultural purposes only and not to be developed. So what has happened to this land, and who are the families which received it.

Unfortunately you appear to be in possession of only half the story. Traditionally the Army and other branches of the armed forces have been the biggest encroachers on NPs and other "forestry" land.

It has yet to be shown that they are returning any of this land and in fact may even be re-enforcing its status under law through article 44.

It is also tempting to look at this reclamation as nothing more than taking money from those who oppose or may oppose the current administration.

As far as "corruption is concerned one only has to look at the handling of the Tiger Temple and other wildlife issues to suspect that there are greater issues being played out than pure motivation to uphold pure conservation principles.

as a coda - it is also worth bearing in mind that encroached forest cannot simply be returned to it's earlier ecological state....once the diversity within an ecosystem has been disrupted, it can take decades even centuries to re-establish - if that is possible at all.
