Elections Set for June 4, 2017

Khmer Times/Taing Vida

Next year’s commune elections will be held on June 4, authorities announced yesterday, with the National Election Committee (NEC) planning to open voter registration in early September.

The announcement was made as political parties, the NEC and civil society groups urged the government to establish a schedule so appropriate planning and arrangements can be made. NEC member and spokesman Hang Puthea told Khmer Times yesterday the date was based on the NEC timeframe to start voter registration across the Kingdom’s 1,633 communes as well as register political parties and campaign procedures. Mr. Puthea said the NEC had already planned and scheduled voter registration to start on September 1 and run until November 2016, allowing two months from December to January 2017 to handle voter registration complaints.

He said he expected to create an official final list of voters by the end of February 2017. “We are now waiting for equipment such as computers from the EU, who pledged to provide them by mid-July,” Mr. Puthea said. “Then the NEC will start training staff to work on voter registration to prepare and begin on September 1.”
