BANGKOK: -- A lorry caused a big pile-up on the Bhumipol Bridge Wednesday involving 11 other vehicles.

The driver, who claimed that his brakes failed, was charged with negligence causing damage to others reported Thairath.

Fortunately the accident that caused serious damage to many vehicles only resulted in one minor injury to a passenger in a taxi.

The 18 wheel container lorry of the SCP company being driven by 48 year old Sawaeng Thewalam was carrying fish between a depot in Mahachai and Klong Toey. Sawaeng said that as he was leaving the bridge his brakes failed causing him to collide with the other vehicles caught at a red light. He had tried to slow the lorry by veering into the side of the bridge but to no avail.

Sarusak Sawatphimuk, 39, a passenger in a severely damaged taxi was taken to hospital but was lucky to only have minor injuries.

The lorry driver was taken to the police station as an investigation began into the cause of the accident. Her was initially charged with negligent driving causing damage to others.

Air brakes rarely fail.

"In reality, brake systems are designed so that a complete catastrophic failure is an extremely rare event. Therefore, alleged brake failures usually are not failures at all but performance problems stemming from deficient maintenance."

With not a small amount of assistance from a somewhat deficient mind

air brakes are designed so that the air pressure keeps the brakes disengaged ie brakes off. when pressure is lost in the system, the brakes are applied. its a safety feature

You are totally correct, worn brake shoes or badly ajdusted brake shoes would cause the shoes to not make contact with the brake drum. My money is brakes not adj for some time.

Welcome to Thailand, the land of accidents where significant amount of decades old poorly maintained trucks and buses roaming the streets daily driven by inadequate, drunk or not properly educated drivers. You don't need to be fortune teller to see it's just a matter of time until accident happens. If the authorities take this matter more seriously in a co-ordinated manner, innocent lives could be saved but the lack of pro-active preventative measures, law enforcement, poor training and inspections, drunk or tired/drugged drivers are one of the root causes of these kind of incidents. Unfortunately nothing will prevent the same kind of accidents again and again until they start to value, respect law and order to meet the international standards of safe driving. It maybe a good idea to leave a huge billboard or poster on each accident site with the photos and a simple explanation why is that accident happened to build compassionate awareness and remind or educate the drivers of the dangers associated...

Don't we have enough billboards already? The paint marks on the road are sufficient reminder that an accident happened there recently - and they don't have much traffic calming effect either.

decades old poorly maintained........inadequate, drunk or not properly educated........sounds like quite a few of the Pattaya ex-pats
