The government’s two-month nationwide campaign to distribute water to those affected by drought officially ended yesterday, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced while speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Asia-Europe University in Phnom Penh. “Today, on behalf of the government of Cambodia, I announce the end of the campaign to contribute water to the people all over the country,” said Mr. Hun Sen.

The prime minister, however, stressed that water distribution to the rural poor had not ended definitively. “It does not mean we will stop distributing water to them anymore at all. We keep continuing our activity to provide water to people in some areas that still lack it for their daily use,” he said, adding that the need to supply citizens with water was unprecedented.

“This year should be used as a lesson, to be used to prepare for future drought-years,” he said. Mr. Hun Sen also used his speech at the graduation ceremony to order the Kingdom’s officials to continue digging and restoring wells and ponds in their municipalities, as well as to be prepared for severe storms. Schools and hospitals destroyed by storms should be the first to be repaired when communities are affected by them, the prime minister said.
