PHNOM PENH: -- Pro-government unions have demanded authorities to take action against any unions caught leading protests in support of embattled opposition acting leader Ken Sokha saying such protests are illegal under the new law, according to The Phnom Penh Post on Monday.

Independent union leaders have called for workers to strike if Cambodia National Rescue Party acting president Kon Sokha is arrested.

Three pro-government unions representing some 60,000 workers released statements last Friday and Saturday condemning any union leader who persuade workers to protest for political objectives.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions also asked authorities to take legal action against union leaders and employees who violate employment policies by protesting for political motives.

Sokha is embroiled in a raft of questionable cases pertaining to an alleged affair with a hairdresser. He was charged by the court after he failed to appear in court for questioning on Thursday.

Muen Tola, executive director of labour rights group Central said the calls by pro-government unions were indicative of double standard for unions because they are always involved in politics.
