BANGKOK: -- Former deputy prime minister and Bangkok Bank chairman Kosit Panpiamrat died of cancer at Chulalongkorn hospital today. He was 73.

His body is being placed at Wat Thepsirin for religious rites.

Mr Kosit was graduate with a BA in political science from Chulalongkorn University. He obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Maryland and attended a training course of the Natioinal Defence College in 1988.

Mr Kosit began his work as an economist at the World Bank in Washington DC and later returned to Thailand to pursue a career at the National Economic and Social Development Board and steadily climbed up the latter until he became deputy secretary-general of the NESDB.

He entered politics by joining the government of General Suchinda Kraprayoon as secretary-general of the prime minister in 1992 and later joined the government of prime minister Anand Panyarachun as agriculture minister.

He later joined the governments of prime ministers Banharn Silpa-archa and General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh as industry minister and finance minister respectively. After that he returned to the Bangkok Bank as the chairman.

He later joined the government of General Surayudh Chulanont as the deputy prime minister and industry minister.
