Looking for recommendations for 27" display

Featured Replies

Hi,

Before I moved to TH last month, I sold my Apple Thunderbolt display. I am now looking to by a new display that I can use with my

Apple Mac Mini (Quad-Core i7 2,3Ghz, year 2012)

I thought the Thunderbolt display was brilliant but it is quite expensive. So rather than buying another Thunderbolt I wondered if you guys have a few recommendations for me which other displays and manufacturers I should check out before making a purchasing decision. Also, as I am new in BKK, when I want to see the displays should I go to MBK or where are the "good" places to go to in Bangkok?

Any thoughts and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

DUS

As far a displays go, I love my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch). It is worth the upgrade in my opinion. You can still use the Mini for something else.

Hehe, I can understand that you love your iMac, however, upgrading and paying 1,600 quid and more isn´t an option for me. I just need a display and plan to invest less than the Thunderbolt display costs.

UHD TV's are really coming down in price these days... Depending on what you are doing with your computer, that could be an option?

I tried my Mini, to UHD TV with HDMI cable, the other day, image was pretty darn good. (regular TV is not same, been there, tried that! bah.gif )

Perhaps find a store where they will let you try out... ( although larger stores usually have a 7 day return policy, which might be worth trying)

My Thunderbolt screen is starting to age and only 4 k! sad.png

Hello,

As I am just a normal user without any special understanding of technical specifications etc I have another general/basic question.

When I started reading about displays and the various recommendations made in this thread I obviously came across various UHD and 4k displays. But I then also read that these displays would not be suitable for my Mac mini since it would only be able to run in that resolution with 30Hz. As I said, I am not a "techie" so what does it mean when I read that these displays are not a good choice for my Mac? If UHD/4K displays are not suitable for my old Mini, do I have to look for "older" displays? What is the native resolution I should aim for? The same one my old Apple Thunderbolt display had? I am really confused now. :-(

I would appreciate and help on this question. Thank you!

My Mini, same specs as yours if I remember, (but 2011 model, same for thunderbolt screen) works fine, on UHD 4K although I have not used it much for computer work mostly photography... One day when I have time, I will try it out more!!!!

My old TV (not UHD) I used to watch television programs, but it was very tedious using a mouse every time a program finished. But used to find text was not clear, ... UHD is better. (Now use IPTV for television)

I too, am not techy enough to answer all the questions, it's a case of trying really. There are two resolutions to UHD, you need to watch and get the higher resolution models ... search LG websites (personally not a fan of Samsung)... and view the specs. Dell as someone mentioned would be good on their higher end monitors, but cost more than UHD tellies these days! I've not checked current prices of Thunderbolt screens.

I am sure others will add their experiences!

30 Hz could cause eye fatigue, especially under fluorescent lamps as it can cause a flickering effect depending on an individuals eyes and their persistence. Also,if a gamer, could be an issue also with insufficient frame rates.

I tried a bit more experimenting my TV last night... images through Picasa web site where not good quality viewing ... yet when viewing directly through the Mini they are good.

Comes down to what the OP wants to do with the computer...
