Hi All

I'm looking to buy a 2nd hand 4WD pick up truck and I'm trying to decide between Toyota and Isuzu from around 2012.

If any one owns a vehicle of either brand that's more than say 5 years old could you just let me know if you consider them to be a reliable brand or if they've needed repairing (other than normal servicing and maintenance) engine trouble, transmission, electronics, electric windows, etc.

Thanks guys.

The Dmax and Hilux are both reliable. We had a 2011 Fortuner and several older Dmax's that did around 300,000 km each with no major problems.

Both command pretty good resale value with cheap super basic models through to more expensive dual cab, 4WD auto models. Isuzu had a model change in 2012 with new exterior and interior styling but a lot of the mechanicals carried over.

Both good options but we travel quite a lot & Izuzu's with troubles on the side of the road are 4-5 to 1 versus Toyota - worse in overheating conditions.....

I've had both (2WD models though)

Comparable reliability generally speaking but quite some trouble with Isuzus on electrical accessories when getting old.

Isuzus have much better resale value due to their much lower fuel consumption. Not quite an issue right now with low fuel prices but times will change.

Toyotas have more bang and are much smoother and quieter to drive.

Isuzus are easier and cheaper to fix as far as the engine is concerned. Roadside mechanics don't seem to like the Toyotas much.

What will be more important is how well looked after the vehicle was before you bought it...as you are buying second hand. Vehicles that would be scrapped in the West are repaired here...and often that results in the vehicle being immediately sold on. Beware of second hand vehicles here. Resale is very high on these pickups. I'd go for new if at all possible.

Have had a Isuzu vcross since 2013 just done 70000km. No issues as its serviced at Isuzu when its due. Buying second hand its always worth checking at Toyota or Isuzu to see if its been maintained by them as its tracked in there database and easy for them to check.

How easy is it to check insurance claims that have been made on a second hand car? That may indicate if it's had a major accident and been repaired.

Impossible.

I guess it would only be possible if you knew the previous owner and they were willing to give that information. Or perhaps the insurance company isn't at liberty to divulge it.

You are right there. About 5 or 6 years ago I rented a Toyota Vigo & a D max in the same week in Chiang Mai. (I wanted the Vigo back but it was already out). I likened the difference to getting out of a Mercedes and into a tractor!

I've worked with vehicles most of my life and so have driven very many different things so feel qualified to offer a fair and reasonable judgement.
