COE calls for structural safety at hillside buildings during rainy season

BANGKOK, 6 June 2016 (NNT) – The Council of Engineers (COE) has warned owners of hillside buildings and other structures on dangers of landslide during rainy season which might possibly cause damages and harmful accidents.

The Council of Engineers Secretary General Amorn Pimanmas said the agency is gathering structural information following the collapse incident at a hotel in Koh Chang island, which killed one tourist and injured a few others.

Facts and figures related to the incident will be analyzed for the council to determine its cause.

He said heavy rains in the northern and northeastern parts of Thailand during rainy season might possibly increase the likelihood of flashfloods and landslides which could possibly cause damages to buildings and harms to humans.

The authorities have been urged to inspect the structures of buildings and tourist attractions in the affected area, especially those at hillsides and highlands as they have higher risks of being hit by landslides which might cause the buildings to collapse.

A bit late now the buildings have been put up as post #2 says, what do they suggest,knocking them all down?

Close the businesses and move out of the house, if either is on a hillside. Shouldn't the government send structural engineers to any place that requests an evaluation? Do they have an Army Corp of Engineers?
