NRSA claims crop insurance helps diversify risk

BANGKOK, 6 June 2016 (NNT) – The National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) says crop insurance will help to achieve risk diversity in the agricultural sector.

Somchai Richupan, Chairman of the NRSA’s subcommittee in charge of financial and monetary reform, yesterday talked about the reform of agricultural insurance which is an important mechanism that deals with agricultural non-systematic risk.

He said an effective diversification method is necessary in the Thai agricultural sector and that crop insurance is the answer to diversifying risk among producers.

The chairman also urged the administrative body to adjust its role in assisting farmers in times of natural disasters – such as drought and flood - which are a major cause of crop damage.

In the long run, he said the government should help producers to help themselves by setting up a sustainable mechanism such as agricultural cooperatives that all farmers can be a part of.

More agricultural cooperatives; 5, 10, 15 year plans; section 44; door to door visits from government "volunteers" to explain policies; a new Ministry to control information etc, etc.

This all sounds very familiar, what could possibly go wrong?

Off topic, but a quick question: Are the members of the NLA, NRSA and NCPO all the same? If so,do they receive compensation 3 times when they attend meetings

How many rice farmers have got the money to purchase crop insurance?
Not many i think, most will see it as a waste of time.

Many years rice farmers lose their crops, they just grin and bear it.

No, members of the NLA, NRSA and NCPO are not all the same.

On 2 August 2014, a law was issued to determine monthly salaries and other monetary benefits for the NCPO members. General Prayuth is granted a total of Bt 125,590 per month, while each of the other NCPO members is given a total of Bt 119,920 per month. These benefits are paid in addition to the benefits they are already entitled to by virtue of their posts in the armed forces.

By extension it wouldn't be too presumptious that a military member of the NCPO who is also a member of the NLA would also receive additional salary for the latter.

Case in point is Prayut's brother Gen Preecha. He was appointed by Prayut to the NCPO, the NLA and now Permanent Secretary of Defense. Does his various appointments mean he is receiving as many as three separate salaries in addition to his General's salary?

Farmers co-operatives? I don't think organising the farmers into a collective with bargaining power is high on anyone's to do list.

Remember the Assembly of the Poor from 2010?
