Suu Kyi to meet Burmese migrant workers during her visit to Thailand during June 23-25

BANGKOK: -- Burmese Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi will meet with Burmese migrant workers in Thailand, possibly in Mahachai, during her three-day visit to the country late this month, The Irrawaddy reported on Monday quoting the Foreign Ministry.

Kyaw Zeya, director-general of the Foreign Ministry, said that specific itineraries have yet to be finalized by officials of the two countries. Suu Kyi will reportedly visit the fishing town of Mahchai which is home to a large number of Burmese migrant workers.

In promoting mutual relations and cooperation between Thailand and Burma, Kyaw Zeya said Burmese migrant worker issue plays an important role.

There are about three million Burmese migrant workers in Thailand.

A Thailand-based migrant workers’ rights group, Andy Hall, told The Irrawaddy on Monday that Suu Kyi’s visit would be a dual opportunity for her to tackle the issue of migrant workers exploitation in Thailand and to keep a promise she made during a visit to Mahachai in 2012.

Suu Kyi’s 2012 trip to Thailand was her first outside Burma after being released from house arrest. During the visit, she vowed to help Burmese migrant workers once she was in a position to do so.

Andy Hall said that, this time, he thought Suu Kyi would return to Mahachai to keep her promise to the migrant workers. He added that he thought the Burmese leader would be trying to push the Thai government to provide training to the migrant workers to increase their skills so that they could go home and help in the rebuilding of the country’s economy.

So, even though ASSK is the de facto President of Burma , this is not a state visit and she will not be dining with the Generals and Admirals of the Thai government? Am I right?

Just going to chat again with the Burmese in Mahachai district.whistling.gif

Well since the Thai Generals and the Burmese Generals appear to be "bestest mates" any dinner conversation would probably be a bit umh, stilted?

She has accepted the baby steps needed to make

the small changes she can, A

very determined lady

I wish her all the success in the future.

I dare say she would have had enough of military strong men

"Sea food for thought, wouldn't you say?"

"Brussel sprouts anyone?"

Bigger hat though, and that counts in the circles these chaps move in!

I'll bet she scares the crap out of the Burmese and Thai military minnow's considering what she has been through and dealing with the junta in Burma.

Also the timing is good for Andy Hall's court case, The world will be watching and I wonder just how the Junta mouth peace will spin this into a ASSK is very happy with all things in LOS photo's pointing smiles and "AA" for any media who asks the wrong questions!!!

Will she visit Burmese Rohingya as well?

One of the best moves she could make would to be to visit the 2 innocent young men being held for murders they didn't commit and declare her belief in their innocence.
