A friend of mine committed a minor offence for which he was fined 1000b. as he is a foreigner, he was automatically deported under Thai law. He loves the place and wants to come back. A red stamp was put in his passport. Does anyone know exactly what this means? Any sensible advise would be appreciated.

Just get a new passport. I've heard washing wachines can make a real mess of your current one.

If you need to get a visa, probably best to go in person to a consulate which uses non-Thai staff. They generally stamp your passport with the visa whilst you wait, with few checks.

This was all raised earlier - see 'Pattaya Mail letter' started by Konangrit. (Sorry, don't know how to hyperlink it).

The guy must have been short a few cells in the cerebellum, trying to freeload at the Montien. A small hotel with a pool would probably not mind, especially if you buy a drink or two, or a snack, while gatecrashing the pool. But to regularly go into the pool of a five-star hotel, where you are not a guest, and walk off with a towel after using the pool seems the height of idiocy to me.

Anyway, the guy blew a three-month visa for this.

Maybe a change of passport would be OK, especially if he changes the way he names himself - leave out a middle name, something like that. Basically it will be a 'suck it and see' operation, 'cos there ain't no tried and tested way to get in to somewhere you've already been thrown out of and barred from. Take it from an ex-bouncer :o

and the passport office would need to be very cooperative to mix up ones name.

He can change his name, then get a new passport.

As he is on S.O. register, they may not let him travel.

Does this type of punishment (deportation) apply to things like littering as well?

Never been busted for anything in thailand, but just wondering.

He stole something and the hotel pressed charges ( I'd guess coz he was freeloading at the pool ) A bit of litter won't do it I'd say. :o

:o Return to country of origin, change your name (as someone said - leave out the middle name or change the surname) get a new passport and come back. There is a solicitor I know of in Maneeya Building who purports to have family in high up places in Immigration in Suan Plu and can assist in obtaining necessary visa or other documentation (WP). I have friends for whom this has been done in the past and the solicitor is quite aware of the name change reasons.
