Blind student receives award for academic excellence

BANGKOK, 9 June 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has presented a certificate to an outstanding blind student who graduated university with first class honors.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Pol. Gen. Adul Saengsingkeaw delivered an honorary plaque and certificate to Mr. Damkerng Mungthanya for his academic achievement.

Mr. Damkern graduated from the Faculty of Education at at Chulalongkorn University with a 3.95 GPA, majoring in English. He is currently waiting to take exams to become a civil servant in an assistant teacher position.

Pol. Gen. Adul said his ministry will always give people with disabilities a chance to grow academically and professionally, so they can happily contribute to the society.

They said they gave him a plaque.

well at least Thais are being a bit more concerning towards those with disability, instead of shunning them or sweeping them under the rug, hiding them away from eyes etc.

Personally if they really cared, there would be facilities like traffic lights and Braile and just maybe easy wheel chair access around the city.

Obviously a plaque and award for excellence costs less and gains more face instantly. also means nothing in the long run - cost em about 200 baht! well done

The best thing to happen in Thailand for many decades was that a member of the royal family was born with an exceptionality...it cast a spotlight on the issue and compelled Thais to view individuals with exceptionalities in a far more positive light...this is such a positive example for the direction Thai education needs to travel...

I went to grad school with a fellow who was totally blind...he just sat and listened to lectures...no aid or assistant...for tests, he would dictate his answers into a tape recorder...I never understood how he was able to retain so much information, but he was amazing...he also became a teacher, teaching at a university in the usa and then moving to an administrators position...some people will amaze you if you give them the chance..
