The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) yesterday asked officials at the National Assembly to arrange talks with the ruling Cambodian’s People Party (CPP) to kick-start the “culture of dialogue” again. But their request was rejected by the ruling party, who through a spokesman said a formal letter of request had to be submitted before any talks could be considered.

A verbal request was initiated by CNRP MPs Pol Hom and Eng Chhai Eang, according to Leng Peng Long, a spokesman for the National Assembly. “Though it’s not a written request, I have alerted the CPP already. Now the two parties will have to decide whether they can meet or not.”

As a team leader assigned to strengthen the “culture of dialogue,” Mr. Hom said the party was ready to discuss political issues with the CPP, but they had not been responsive to any overtures, despite repeatedly publicizing and touting their efforts to preserve the “culture of dialogue.” “We heard they [CPP] said the CNRP is not ready to talk since we have no leader. How come? We have 55 seats in the assembly and Kem Sokha automatically replaced Mr. Rainsy as acting president. He is ready to talk. We are ready to solve problems,” Mr. Hom said.
