Vietnamese vendors arrested for street vending



BANGKOK: -- Labour inspectors yesterday arrested three Vietnamese vendors in Nonthaburi area for illegal street vending.

The inspection of Soi Raewadee in Nonthaburi came after residents complained of alien street vendors selling grilled sausages and steamed maizes illegally.

Three Vietnamese vendors were apprehended.

Upon arrest, they showed passage stickers which they claimed they have paid to obtain permission to street vending.

All said they paid to a man who used a cab to partly conceal his face and claimed he is a police officer.

The man collected each of them over 2,000 baht a month and gave them a sticker which he claimed could save them.

They admitted to enter the country as tourist, and had rented a house in the Soi Raewadee 10 for over three months now.

According to authorities Vietnam is among 49 countries whose citizens are allowed to enter the country for 30 days without visas for each entry.

This has become a loophole that allows Vietnamese to enter the country to work illegally.

Vending is an occupation reserved for Thais. Alien found vending will be subject to five years in prison and 2,000-100,000 baht fine.
