Cambodian government warned by EU to end “judicial harassment”

The European Parliament is stepping up pressure on the Cambodian government to put an end to its “judicial harassment” of opposition party members and human rights defenders, according to The Phnom Penh Post on Friday.

A motion, endorsed by members of European Parliament, warned that the amount of EU financial assistance to Cambodia should be dependent on improvements of the country’s human rights situation.

The EU plans to provide about $66 million to various Cambodian state agencies this year. It has also pledged $11.3 million to support election preparations and has pledged $410 million between 2014-2020.

The motion asks EU member states , the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, the European External Action Service and the European Commission to set “clear benchmarks” for Cambodia to meet for the upcoming election that are consistent with international laws on free expression and assembly.

Currently, two highest-ranking opposition members – president Sam Rainsy and his deputy, Kem Sokha – are facing criminal charges as are two other opposition lawmakers.

Four rights workers and one election official are also in detention on allegations of bribery stemming from a purported sex scandal involving Sokha.

Sounds like Thailand

Sound like Thailand. Yeah...But Thailand was ahead of other South East Asian Nations. Thanks to our lovely leader, now we are at the bottom of the list.

Oh Yes, You be quite or we might not take your multi millions of dollars that you give us every year (to keep our government officials in new cars and mansions) or at least delay it.So There EU take that.

Cambodia is worse than Thailand, on nearly every level. Though the UN, and many other gullible organizations consider it a democracy, it is an absolute autocracy. Hun Sen holds all the power, along with his mighty generals. They steal land by the billions, they pillage as they please, and they lock up, and assassinate their opponents at will. Fortunately, Thailand is nowhere near as bad as Cambodia. As much as some of us are displeased with Little P., at least he has not stooped as low as Sen, who is a despotic, power hungry, money grubbing madman.
