Trump calls for GOP unity but continues intraparty attacks

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Campaigning in a pair of crucial battleground states, Donald Trump bashed Democrats and Republicans alike Saturday, from Hillary Clinton to former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

First at a convention center in Tampa, Florida, and then in an airport hangar outside Pittsburgh, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee tore into fellow Republicans who have been slow to back him, again dashing hopes among some in the party that Trump would solely train his fire on his likely general election foe.

"I'd like to see Republican leadership be very strong, very smart and you got to be cool," he said in Moon Township, Penn., saying that Republicans risked losing seats in the House and Senate.

"If not, I'm gonna win but a lot of other people are not," Trump said. "We are going to win either way."

He saved his most vicious broadsides for Romney, who speaking Saturday at a GOP retreat in Utah, said that in a race between Clinton and Trump, "either choice is destructive."

"Mitt Romney is a sad case. He choked," Trump said. "You know what a choke artist is? You know a guy who missed a kick, you get rid of him, right? He choked like a dog."

Trump also revived "Crooked Hillary," his favorite moniker for Clinton, calling her a "maniac." He again went after another one of his vocal critics — Sen. Elizabeth Warren — calling her "Pocahontas," a reference to her Native American ancestry.

"I said yes, I will apologize: to Pocahontas," he said in Tampa. "To Pocahontas I will apologize, because Pocahontas is insulted."

The speeches Saturday — which echoed the combative tone of his events during the primaries — may do little to reassure weary Republicans that he will moderate his temperament in the lead up to the general election. But the campaign did take one small step toward improving its voter data collection efforts, which have come under some criticism for being insufficient.

At the Pennsylvania stop, volunteers staffed a merchandise stand and those that bought hats or shirts left their information with the campaign. While selling paraphernalia is a staple feature at most campaign rallies, the Trump team had largely eschewed selling merchandise at rallies, allowing bootleggers to sell unofficial versions outside the venues.

The Trump campaign dismissed concerns about crowd size on Trump's first general election campaign swing, saying the events were only announced a few days prior. The rally in Tampa was not as well-attended as the typical Trump rally, as was an event in Richmond, Virginia, Friday. The Pennsylvania event, held at a smaller venue, attracted more supporters.

Trump — who says he is expanding his campaign slogan to be "Make America Great For Everyone" — hugged an American flag to demonstrate his love for his country and it wasn't the only display of affection at the Tampa rally:

Toward the end of his speech, supporters broke into a chorus of "Happy Birthday." Trump turns 70-years old on June 14.

As his supporters began singing, Trump laughed and said "I don't want to hear about it."

He said he's "very torn" about the birthday, but added: "I feel like I'm 35. That's the good news."

"Make America Great For Everyone", well...for white guys. They're the ones who deserve it, no?

The Trump campaign is a dumpster fire.

1. No campaign infrastructure

2. No material plan for the general election

3. No data or analytics team

4. No fundraising operation

5. Barely competent skeletal staff

6. No practical knowledge of politics

7. An inconsistent message because he spews whatever is running through his twisted low-information brain at any given moment

8. A Republican party that is reluctant to back him because he's a racist loser

His philosophy is “I just don’t think I need nearly as much money as other people need because I get so much publicity." Trump doesn’t take direction and he doesn’t do strategy.

Hillary Clinton has 660 more people on her payroll than Trump! Trump's amateurist political philosophy is not about to suddenly change. There is no way to turn this disaster around. It's only going to get worse. If Trump dials down the hate speech, he's going to get less free coverage. He's screwed.

When Bernie finally comes around and supports HRC, the campaign takes off united in their campaign to elect Democrats and rid the country of the wingnut Republicans.

The Republican party is toast and they know it.

The more establisment R attack i think its better for TRUMP. The establishment had 2 chances to beat a socialist and failed miserably both times.

Numbnutts dont understand but doubling usa debt to 20 Trillion will lower standards of living the world over.

Good to see Trump acting all presidential, well at least Trumps idea of presidential. Let's not write him off yet (I know I always do) or the fun goes out of it. Let's pretend he has a chance. Usually at the pantomine you can cheer the hero and boo the baddie but here there is no hero so you have to boo them both!

More popcorn over here please!

The following quotation from Trump's speech pretty well says it all

The terms choke artist and crooked Hillary and the rest of his drivel is growing old and stale and overused. He is no better than a used car salesman. His misdemeaning comments about Elizabeth Warren are truly disingenuous at best. The man is a complete and utter fraud.

Please don't give suggestions to Trump on how to run a national campaign. He's learning (slowly) on the job. He's like Thailand, in that he thinks he has everything figured out and doesn't need any outside help. Let's not clue him in. More fun to watch him self-destruct, like the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz, when she dissolves into the pavement.

And the ding dong still hasn't learning that childish name-calling isn't helping him. Sure, it's reinforcing the vigor of his redneck fan club, but that's all it's doing. It's certainly not gaining any more followers. Who can say with a straight face that Trump will gain 5 added followers between now and November 8th. Ain't gonna happen, except in the movie version paid for by Trump Productions. They'll start filming it on November 12th, when Trump has wiped the spittle and spray tan off his face.

The more establisment R attack i think its better for TRUMP. The establishment had 2 chances to beat a socialist and failed miserably both times.

If anyone can double the debt with no worries, it would be Trump. His whole career is built on borrowed money, and much his daily calories is spent trying to avoid paying money he owes. That's a big reason why he's had thousands of lawsuits filed against him, and lost most of them. He still has lawsuits to fight, and they mostly have the same theme: Trump trying to run away from paying his bills.

Trump might attempt to create unity, if he even knew the definition of the word. His entire DNA makeup is about division, and discord. That is who he is. You cannot change a cat's stripes. He could not change if he wanted to, as he has very little self control, nor consciousness. He is the center of the universe. How do you change the center of the universe? How do you bring humility to a man who is convinced he is the most important person in the world?

Historically, people with that point of view have been considered very, very dangerous. He is somehow convincing his devotees that he is not a dangerous man.
