Cabinet extends aid for farmers, nods to elderly care improvement

BANGKOK, 15 June 2016 (NNT) – The Cabinet has given approval to an extension of the aid program for drought-affected farmers as well as a plan to improve dental services for the elderly.

After the Cabinet meeting, Deputy Government Spokesperson Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhontapatipak revealed that among the matters taken into consideration this week were the enhancement of living standards of agriculturists and the provision of better care for the elderly population in preparation for Thailand’s status as an aging society.

The Deputy Spokesperson elaborated that the meeting agreed to carry on with the assistance program for drought-stricken farmers which features knowledge-sharing workshops and income-generating activities. As many as 150,000 livestock raisers and 70,000 fishermen in 22 provinces are expected to benefit from the extended program.

As for the improvement of elderly care, Maj Gen Weerachon said the green light was granted to an action plan for dental care under the National Oral Health Care Plan for the Elderly 2015-2022. The plan seeks to raise the quality of dental services, dental health insurance and primary dental care, with priority placed on people above the age of 60 and those aged 40 to 59 categorized as the secondary group.
