Israel cuts water supplies to West Bank during Ramadan

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are left without access to safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month

DOHA: -- Israel's national water company has cut crucial water supplies to large areas of the occupied-West Bank, leaving tens of thousands of Palestinians without access to safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Mekorot, the main supplier of water to Palestinian towns and cities, siphoned off water supplies to the municipality of Jenin, several Nablus villages and the city of Salfit and its surrounding villages.

Ayman Rabi, the executive director of the Palestinian Hydrology Group, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that in some areas people had not received water for more than 40 days.

Palestinians who complain about water shortages can just pack up and move.

There are plenty of Israeli settlers who are waiting to take their place.

Interesting spin. This has been happening for some time, so why bring ramadan into it? And the concept of "siphoned off" - aren't these other municipalities entitled to water too, or is that hard to see when you are a perpetual victim?

No information about the water supply situation, if there is a shortage or how widespread it might be. Who cares, look what they are doing to ME!

'Israelis, including settlers, consume five times more water than Palestinians in the West Bank, 350 litres per person per day in Israel compared with 60 litres per Palestinian per day in the West Bank'

If you oppress people this way by cutting their water, you cannot expect them to sit and wait and turn their other cheek.

Consumption isn't necessarily related to availability. Do you have any figures on deodorant sales?

?? You cant read english?

It is easy to understand. Israelis use 5 times more water than palestinians.

Classic oppression tactics from Israel. First get their land by force, use an embargo to push them and then cut their water.

Then why israel and its citizens get surprised when those opressed people with even not enough water to drink and use go and attack innocent victims?

Yes, thank you, quite well. I can also think and analyse what I have read. Water systems are not normally linked, and plentiful water in one area doesn't counteract a drought in another. But there is no information given about supply availability, only a BS linkage to ramadan, and a similar claim that water is being "syphoned off", as if other areas in the supply zone don't deserve water too. Are the cuts widespread or not, is somebody being short-changed, or is it just another attempt to play the "muslim discrimination" game?

This is good time to do it America France Philippines and the rest of the world need to worry about the Muslims in their country not the Muslims in the WestBank

when they speak about water consumption, usually it is total water usage divided by total population.

these are attempts from Israel to push palestinians.

and attempts from Israel to create more radical jihadists bombing and killing us.

if there were no Israel oppression towards Palestinians for a century, i am sure there were less muslim jihadists creating problems right now.

for some it is funny. for some insensitive and insensible people.

bc they have never been oppressed, phosphorus bombed, embargoed or got a water shortage in their lives under 50 degrees Celsius in a hot desert. of their land is never stolen or taken by force by someone else.

and then it is not fun for such discriminating insensitive people when their a..s..s..s..e..s and families get bombed or killed by newly recruits joined ISIS due to such inhumane oppression tactics from Israel.

Israel has embarked on a war of attrition that aims to completely swallow up Palestine and either push out or subjugate the Palestinian population. It's a Lebensraum policy as brazen as that of the Nazis.

No one can stop the march of history and the Palestinians are paying the price of centuries of inactivity. Thing is, Israel's aggression in Palestine is at the root of the current global insecurity, which is all about Islam's damaged pride. Nobody has yet explained that to Israel. It ought to be Ban Ki Moon's job, but that man is utterly useless and the world has burned under his watch.

These are the descendants of European jews who were confined in places such as the Warsaw and Theresienstadt ghettos. The similarities are self evident but they harp on about how we must never forget the past while they are doing exactly the same. It beggars believe, really.

Israel seems to have learned from Hitler.

They are in war with Palestina's, so every option is an option.

They have the power over a vital thing as water, so ......

Just great all those religions and groupings of mankind, brings nothing but shit.

There is no god no devil, only within humans.

And every time the devil is winning.

More than crap, Ben is playing some "keyboard-merry-go-round" in very, very small circles. Should be deported to the West Bank for some years.

does it matter?

water shortage or not, an Israeli is using 5.5 times more water than a Palestinian so clearly there is an inequality and disrespect for human rights and a clear pressure.

very well Israelis can share that water and according to international laws, they have to.

On 28 July 2010, through Resolution 64/292, the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realisation of all human rights.

You are probably just trolling.
Israel steals many of Palestinians' resources including water and land.
At the same time undermining their economy and stealing Palestinian pension funds witheld in Israel
“Part of the denial of political freedom is the denial of economic freedom. Israel has, for years, made money from the denial of Palestinian freedom, whether by stealing land, resources, or by blocking off Palestinians through checkpoints, so as to make it easier to flood Palestinian markets with Israeli goods.”

Al Jazeera lifted the story off Gulf News (http://gulfnews.com/news/mena/palestine/israel-cuts-water-in-west-bank-during-ramadan-1.1845073) which in turn picked up on a story by PIC (The Palestinian Information Center), which can be found here - http://english.palinfo.com/site/pages/details.aspx?itemid=79023#.V1r8FvUXzqw.facebook

As far as I can ascertain, there was no announcement by the PWA (Palestinian Water Authority), nor is the story carried by Ma'an or WAFA. Even so, the story might very well be true, even if it ignores context and leaves out certain details.

The agreements between Israel and the Palestinian regarding water go back to the Oslo Accords. It was one of them things which was supposed to be dealt with in the final permanent agreement which failed to materialize (cue nonsense posts about it being due to failure of one side only). When it came to water, the interim agreement was certainly not in favor of the Palestinians. It is hard to tell why they did not insist on getting a better deal, specifically with regard to this issue. And before more nonsense posts show up - they were not forced nor tricked, the details of the agreement are clear.

There is no denying that the basics of the situation are not fair - the above mentioned water allocation, Israel making it hard for Palestinians to develop water sources (some due to bureaucracy or malice, and some on more objective grounds), and the added thorn of having them illegal settlements enjoying better water supply.

But there are also other sides to this, specifically more related to the OP. Under the agreement, Israel sells (not provides free of charge) water to the PA in order to supplement Palestinian production and demand. The Palestinians (and this refers to individual, municipal and national levels) are somewhat lax when it comes to paying them water bills. The way the distribution system is set, Mekorot (Israel's national water company) bills municipalities, rather than individuals. When municipalities have trouble paying their bills (due to corruption, lack of funds allocated by the PA and poor tax revenues) things sometimes come to this.

This is pretty much a reoccurring story, and it usually falls on a summer month (increased demand). This year it coincides with Ramadan. Another version of the same relates to electricity, usually coming up on a winter month.

What a bunch of dicks and they wonder why countries are boycotting them.

And that's three forum rules transgressed in one sentence, well done!

Which countries are partaking in this imaginary boycott?

Was the water situation better for the Palestinians under Jordanian rule? Under the British Mandate? In the Ottoman Empire's days?

So, in your learned opinion, Israel is attempting to create more radical jihadists? That's Israel's goal?

Hard to tell if that faulty logic at work, conspiracy theory or simply getting caught up in your own propaganda...

if there were no Israel oppression towards Palestinians for a century,

That would make it 1916. So again, not clear if you wish for Israel not to exist, clueless with regard to historical fact or caught up in your own propaganda...

i am sure there were less muslim jihadists creating problems right now.

How many of the recent attacks had been directly related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

You mean there is no water shortage for ISRAELIS!!! They can fill up their pools, grow oranges, bananas, ...!!!

And charge the palestinians 3 x higher prices as the israelis pay!!!

Why make me sad is that all the terrorism just gone to the wrong people. Why they never hit the right one who bring the problems to the world???

A dishonest and irrelevant deflection referring to up to 100 year old water distribution technology, population sizes and demographic lifestyles. Many village Palestinians used to rely on local springs and wells until Israel stole, destroyed or polluted them.
Perhaps a more relevant question would be: would Palestinians have a better water supply if Israel had not stolen their main aquifers and Palestinians were in control of their own water and land?
