Royal Forest Department introduces special projects to replant forests, build weirs

BANGKOK, 20 June 2016 (NNT) - The Royal Forest Department has introduced a special project to revive and preserve the environment through the replanting of forests and the building of weirs.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Gen. Surasak Karnjanarat has chaired the launch of the Pracharat forest replanting scheme to tackle recurring drought in Nan Province.

Under the initiative, degraded land in Nam-wa and Huay Sali Forests in Wiang Sa District will be replenished, with over 300 rai of land to be replanted with trees.

Gen. Surasak said that the project is intended to reclaim land from influential figures and to restore balance to nature in the area, while providing recreational areas for the public.

In replanting the forest, the Royal Forest Department has prepared seedlings of various precious and indigenous timbers such as Tabaek or Lagerstroemia Calyculata, Daeng or Iron Wood, Burma padauk, Siamese Redwood and Ta-khian or Hopea odorata.

The Natural Resources and Environment Minister and his team will also join local residents in the building of 70 weirs to bring moisture to the forestland and to help reserve water during the rainy season for use during the regular droughts.

Good

Talk a fine talk - but nothing actually happens - except the officials get a little richer.

True enough, corruption is the norm in Thailand, and nobody wants to hold corrupt people to account because they're known to be corrupt themselves. 'There, but for the grace of God, go I", that sort of thing...

Corrupt people with one other characteristic in common, comprise a mutual-benefit club. They are mutually protective. Mafiosi. They are untouchable, except by the people.

300 rai = 118.6 acre

300 rai = 48 hectare

Not exactly a significant project is it?

Re-planting due to corrupt rangers etc cutting down the trees (& making fat-cash) that were already supposed to be 'protected'..then having the gall to stand in front of cameras. Nuff said!
