Can I enter Laos at Chiang Khong border and come back to Thailand the same day without having a plane ticket to obtain 30 day stamp? (Usa passport and only one visa exempt previously)

There was a recent report of someone being denied out/in visas exempt entry at that border, but I think they had many previous entries.

Yes it would help, but if you're staying overnight you could go to Vientiane and get a tourist visa.

Yes. They will usually stop you exiting if you can't immediately re-enter, but they don't have to.

Yes, I would say Nong Khai is a better bet, but unfortunately you are always at the mercy of the IO.

I just want to avoid staying in one of those dirty overpriced hotels in vientiane. I only need two more months and I found that getting the 30 day extention at chiangmai is such a breeze if you use the visa agent next door a simple border run would be just right. I think you'll be ok with another visa exempt entry but just have a plan B.

With only one visa exempt entry before you will have no problem getting another entry.

If you had 3 recent ones you might have a problem.
