New electricity service standards call for improvement: ERC

Tanakorn Sangiam

BANGKOK, 25 June 2016 (NNT) – Electricity service standards call for improvement in favor of power users across the country, said Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) spokesman Viraphol Jirapraditkul.

With respect to the standards for the new electricity service contract, which is effective from March 21, 2016, he said that operations will be improved in favor of about 20 million power users in residences and small businesses.

The new contract calls for the improvement of service standards through new criteria, such as electricity billing requests, meter inspections, payment of an electricity fee differential on installment basis, interest payback for power usage guarantees and the waiver of power cut-offs for the users who may use certain devices for medical reasons.

The ERC is obliged to constantly review electricity services for improvement reasons while the users can report any disruption of power to the 13 Electricity Users Commissions nationwide.

It is indeed an improvement especially the power cut off waiver for people on medical grounds , hundred years behind the times but never the less slowly becoming a part of the community , in this day n age of underground power nothing sends shivers down the spine more when you look at the high voltage lines running above phone cable, if you are on the phone when the high voltage comes down you wont need ear protection, thank Christ for mobiles.......................................coffee1.gif

What is missing is the duty of the Electricity Authority to supply electricity without interruption.

Those who live in the Pattaya area know what I am talking about. There is practically not a week without a power cut of anything between 2 sec to 8 hours.

Now, here in the surrounding of Thayang,Phetchaburi, is it big sh*t, every day the power is fluctuating between 200 and, believe it or not 262V.

Terrable.

I was hoping this would be a call for infrastructure improvements on the residential side, like standardized receptacles that actually grip whatever you plug into them, flat-blade plugs that don't stick out 15 cm from the wall, and proper earth grounding.

What? We are, ever, going to get electricity delivery of a, decent, standard? Can't wait for it! No more low voltage, sudden voltage drops, many 'micro-cuts' every hour, unbalanced phases, 'neutral' with 100V.+ tension on, hours, daylong, un-announced 'service' cuts...! Haven't seen any 'electricicity service standard' contract yet for sure, like guaranteeing delivery of adequate power corresponding to the meter's average, in a Voltage between 5% over and 10% under maybe, that'll be the day, not in a lifetime, IMO!

P.S.: not even mentioning the many hundreds of thousands of Thai households which can(!) even not get any(!) electricity as per today...

so does this mean that there will actually be a ground wire connected to the ground lug?

The electricity companies, here and abroad, do not provide 'grounding', one to three phases and neutral, that's it, didn't you know... It's your responsibility (owner), not theirs. Knowing that most Thai 'electricians' don't have a clue, good luck though!

...And the company will, never ever, accept any kind of responsibility whatever the damage caused by its awfull (no-)'service'(-at-all): it's not us, it's in your property, even with the broken neutral cable down on the street 100m. away they still denied (and the Thais in the street were too afraid to complain, though with 'final' fridges, TVs, PCs, etc., go figure)! ...Bunch of ...!

Most Thais won't recognise much less understand the damage that can be done to appliances and computers by fluctuating voltages or greyouts/blackouts. So the incompetents at the PEA are never held to account. Foreigners who complain are dismissed as unimportant.

That does need to change. 'Thai service' is a myth that Thais like to kid themselves about. Outside of 5-star hotels, if you don't have a 'personal relationship with a Thai, then you can rack off' seems to be the modus operandi...

Electricity seems to be a big issue , i look at the power lines and wonder , you could use them as fishing nets .

Exactly. Where I live, in a low rise apartment block, some 40 odd years old, there is such a tangle and complete mess of hundreds of lines tangled and running across the front of the building that the birds build nests in it and raise their young.
