NLA’s 1st Vice President discusses reform and cooperation with Democrat Party

BANGKOK, 30 June 2016 (NNT) – A vice president of the National Legislative Assembly has been meeting with members of the Democrat Party to discuss the national reform process and cooperation from all related groups and parties.

NLA’s 1st Vice President Alongkorn Ponlaboot on Wednesday was joined by a group of members of the assembly in a visit to the Democrat Party headquarters, where they met party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and other members.

The meeting was intended to provide the party with an update on all 11 areas in the national reform process and to hear other opinions while exchanging ideas related to the direction of the reform efforts.

Mr. Abhisit expressed his concerns over the difficult nature of the reform process and suggested that any reform plans need participation from all parties concerned.

He also stated his confidence that political parties will continue to be key instruments in effecting national reform.

Mr. Alongkorn expressed his gratitude for Mr. Abhisit’s points of observations, suggestions and concerns – all of which the NRSA will take into consideration.

Ah yes. They're trying to get the hopeless Abhisit in power again. Now that he's made just enough criticism of the draft charter to be able to say he's not a poodle.

It;s the only way he's every going to be in power again. Gotta take the opportunities as they come... they don't come very often.

Still, not bad for a Newcaslte lad...

Abhisit himself is not a bad politician, in that he is apparently untainted by money politics and corruption. His western education is a great asset. There is only the question of who ordered the army to open fire with live rounds in 2010. It is a pity that the party he represents and the low profile backers behind them are so irretrievably mired in corruption. If he were able to form a new, clean political party with people of principle from both sides of the political divide, he might stand a chance of being elected. However I doubt the people at the top are up for a new era of clean politics as it would threaten their position.

Hmmm, Not sure. If you think that Abhisit has not been corrupt, that's OK, I accept that is your opinion. I don't have any evidence one way or the other, but few people in Thailand become rich by working hard, most do it the Chinese way. Abhisit's family has money with no provenance and that's a point against their 'honesty index' as far as I'm concerned.

Plus, there is a significant body of opinion linking him and a certain klady at the big house which would do a lot to explain why he is one of the untouchables in Thailand. I will grant that he's a plausible rogue but consider carefully:

Born in UK, went to Eaton, then Oxford to do PPE, then the family returns to Thailand to live a life of ease and wealth. Relinquishes his British citizenship to open up political opportunities in Thailand, then gets elected to lead a political party that hasn't won an election in 20+ years and yet he doesn't get fed to the dogs. Then the rumours of dalliances and connections at the big house. Then pretty substantial indications of being in bed with godfather Suthep, a known criminal and corrupt politician.

My computer calculates the probability of him being honest as being pretty low. maybe 20th percentile at best. I've met and chattered to a few of the Thai pooyay, including Anand and Prayuth (the former did not impress me, the latter disgusted me to the point of me actually wanting to shower after the encounter). I never met Abhisit, but IMHO he's a bit player based on the opinions of people who have met or had dealings with him, a lightweight opportunist with an eye to the main chance if it doesn't depend on him having any actual talent for anything.

Abhisit has many admirable qualities but in no possible way can he be considered a good politician.Despite his intelligence, charm and top tier education he is always overwhemed by events or "used" by others.

I have met him and he came across as sincere and likeable - as any politician would, even the corrupt ones. He is an easy person for a Westerner to converse with as he can slip into his Eaton/Oxford persona with ease. It is hard to prove a negative, but I have no evidence that he is not corrupt other than I have never seen an allegation of corruption made against him which is unusual in a politician leading the country, even an unelected one.

As an expat living in Thailand I personally would be comfortable with him as an elected leader but not in association with the rest of the political dregs that make up his party. However I am not a citizen and my only belief is that the citizens of Thailand should have a free and unrestricted choice of Government and absolute freedom of speech and expression, even in those areas previously off limits.

Talent, other than leadership, is not necessary in a PM if he has a decent cabinet, and opportunism is an essential part of being a successful politician in most democratic systems. He may be lightweight by Western standards but by Thai standards he is a major intellectual.

A political meeting of 5 or more persons without interruption.

Just another day in the Junta's sanitorium.

This meeting was sanctioned and was an exchange of views between the government and an intelligent ex-PM on how to progress the charter.

Red shirts hold meetings on how to create and incite violence and hatred among the people - it is hardly surprising why the latter is banned whereas the former is to be encouraged!!

How many Redshirt meetings have you attended, or are you just repeating the usual drivel that oozes out of the mouths of Dem supporting farangs.
