BANGKOK, 3 July 2016 (NNT) – The first vice president of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has confirmed that a recent Constitutional Court decision does not have any influence on the August 7 referendum.

Surachai Liengboonlertchai, NLA first vice president, was speaking about the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Section 61 Clause 2 of the Public Referendum Act, B.E. 2559. He says the nationwide referendum will be staged as scheduled.

The Constitutional Court earlier reached a unanimous decision that a clause in the public referendum law, which was in question, does not violate the Provisional Constitution.

In a statement at the Constitutional Court, judges announced their completion of deliberations on a part of Section 61 of the 2016 Public Referendum Act, which the Office of the Ombudsman had petitioned for a review.

In addition, Mr Surachai also talked about the recent request by the Pheu Thai Party which asks that the legislature form a committee in charge of reconciliation, with politicians from various parties as its members, saying the NLA would discuss the possibility. He added however, that the decision would have to be made after the public referendum.

They're not giving people much chance to study the changes. One month and a couple of days.

People who want to study this are not allowed to publish an adverse opinion anyway so I guess it doesn't matter too much.

I hope the result is a resounding NO.

Of course its decision does not. The court held that Section 61 Clause 2 did not violate the Provisional Constitution.

Surachai is masterful in stating the obvious.

Surachai Liengboonlertchai, NLA first vice president

The first vice president..., of how many?

Doesn't really matter, he is the first, and don't you forget it!

No documentation has arrived in this household or any other houses in the village for that matter, ie a copy of the draft constitution.

They're going to get their way no matter what anyway, anyone who doesn't see this needs to see an optician.

I am assuming the vast majority of referendum voters will cast their ballots based on a superficial understanding of the proposed Charter. I am not saying this because I have any disdain for Thai voters. I'm saying this because the publication, discussion, and educational efforts appear to be all talk, and little action.

One month left.

Only 1 million copies of the Charter supposedly printed (for 19 million citizens of voting age).

The much vaunted road shows? None reported of late.

The trained army cadets? No reports of their deployment.

The teachers? Nope. Not yet.

By the way, apparently nobody brave enough to produce an English language translation of this storied document.

It's almost as if there is an unspoken agreement to treat this thing like a turd.

Only the NCPO, CDC and NLA, continue the ritual Turd polishing.

Lookin' really good, boys.

National Legislative Assembly. How can they legislate without a democratic parlimentary vote? I know the current powers incharge say they are a government. But they are not the government of the people. Is the country of Thailand run by Thai people or policed by Thai people? Just a query.

AFTER the result of the Brexit referendum, the question dominating Google search was " what is the European Union"

A referendum about a complex issue is never fully understood by most of the people in any country.
