Want to study Thai online. Recommended tutor (w. good English skills)?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just retired to Thailand and this is my first post on this forum.

As I live in a small town without any language school or tutors, I would like to get your recommendations for a good Thai tutor/teacher that can give me private lessons online, preferably on Skype. Speaking, reading and writing. I start out with a very basic knowledge of the Thai language. Would prefer someone experienced with online teaching and with good English skills, so that I can easier communicate my specific needs. Tried tutoring before with a Thai-only speaker and it didn't work out...

Thanks.

Sal

Hi Sal

Welcome to Thailandsmile.png
Have been studying Thai online for 3 months now, and can recommend my teacher. She is the one that finally enabled me to get a good grasp on the tones, which did wonders for my talking and listening skills. Am now learning to read and write. She speaks fluent English.

PM me and I'll send you her contact details.

I'd recommend checking out learnthaistyle.com as well, it's kinda like a network of private tutors that subscribe to the tutoring site and they have tutors all across Thailand, so it may work out that there is someone there who can teach you face to face (Otherwise a lot of them can also likely tutor via skype as well).

Whysoserious,

Thanks for your recommendation.

Slyanimal,

Thanks, but for me that most likely means more trying and failing, which is tearing away at my motivation (and wasting my time). I'd rather go for someone that has been tried and proven by one of the members here.

Best with a teacher who can't speak English IMHO

Hi SaloX - I sent you a message - if I can help get you started, let me know. Maybe I can give you some perspective and help you avoid some of the stumbling blocks that I have seen too many trip over. Learning the language will prove very rewarding for you and it definitely takes time - think of it as fun and interesting, rather than work. It can also provide many cultural insights.

Good luck - enjoy.

Johnniey,

I see your point, but for me at least it didn't work out with a non/poor English speaker, as the language and cultural barrier came in the way of an efficient and effective learning process...

Have now just had my 2nd lesson with the tutor recommended to me by 'Whysoserious', and so far it's going really well.

Good morning,

I can receive new messages again now.

Something was wrong with the messenger service, and thaivisa-support had to reset it.

ThaiWithMod seems pretty good, her videos are very clear and she is fluent in english and young enough not to teach you the old way of speaking.

The best thing is her looks will help keeping your attention up the whole time.

  • 3 weeks later...

950 baht an hour seems way over market rates though.

How do you ask a question then?

950 baht an hour seems way over market rates though.

market rate is about 500 baht one to one with a qualified teacher

My teacher charges less than that, if you commit to a few lessons. She has an individual approach which really works for me, and I have made good progress so far.

Talked to her today, and although busy, she may have an opening for new students if anyone's interested.

Does she have a degree in education?

  • Author

She has studied languages at University, but to me the degree is rather irrelevant, as she is already a native thai speaker, what really matters is the teachers' personality and ability to actually teach.
