macca46
After living in Udon Thani for nearly three year I have decided it time for a change of scenery at the moment my two choices are the above subject. I have been to Pattaya once but it was twelve years ago I know that there have been much progress and many changes and probably another 10000 birds added (female variety) Whilst I have never been to Kanchanaburi have read a lot about it and it looks ok. I am now a single guy living here on a retirement visa. Your thoughts and comments will be appreciated, thanks.
jvs
It all comes down to just a few things, what do you want? What are you looking for? Kan can be very hot with no wind at all. Some times if you don"t know what you want you can begin telling what you don't want. No matter where you go life is what you make of it. Stay in both places for a few months and then make up your mind.
fredob43
They are chalk and cheese. I lived just outside Patts for many years but it finally drove me out. To much traffic over priced + the mix of non Thais there. Some very nice and some the dregs of humanity. Over built without any infrastructure can make it a bit of a bug bare at times. One good thing is you don't have to speak Thai as nearly everyone is bilingual. Saying that I know U/T and the way things work there it might suit you better than Kan: You will find that a lot less crazy than U/T and Patts. Being on your own you could find yourself bit lonely in Kan: Nice place though it you fancy the quieter life + the bundles of tourist that flock there. But you will need to speak at least a good smattering of Thai. Suggest you have a couple of weeks in both and see how/if they suit, before you make up your mind. Hope this helps. DLang
Single guy. Rent an apartment in Pattaya for 3 months. During that time, rent an apartment in Kan for 2 weeks or a month. Head up there on your motorbike (if you have one) for a few weeks before going back to Pattaya.

1FinickyOne
They are so different that if you take time and spend 3-4 days in each, I think you will have the answer to your question.. though factor in that after Udon, Pattaya will seem very exciting at first but that is likely to wear off... One will appeal for permanent living and the other one will not

Hi thanks for that this is the type of response I was trying to get to help me make a decision much appreciated. What Kancha has to offer is: -Nice landscape, especially along the river. Some tourist attractions (to see them once is enough). -For single men, there is "Mae Nam Kwae Road." = A few Western (girlie) Bars. Other than that, Kancha is just another mid-sized town, there are dozen's like this in Thailand. Unless a foreigner is capable of speaking some basic Thai, he is likely to spend most of his time at "Mae Nam Kwae Road", just to be able to talk to someone. And, like somebody already mentioned, it can be a very hot place with no wind. Cheers.
