BANGKOK: -- The Labour Welfare and Protection Department will help redundant workers from Toyota Motors (Thailand) Corp who resigned from the company under the company’s voluntary resignation programme by providing them with skill training and trying to find them jobs.

Mr Suwitthaya Chanthawong, deputy director-general of the department, however, said that he didn’t there was much problem from these workers who are mainly temporary employees of the giant automobile company.

Toyota Motors (Thailoand) Corp introduced the so-called “Farewell from Hearts” programme by offering the temporary workers compensation and severance pay if they choose to quit voluntarily. The company is expected to shed between 800-900 jobs and promised to accept them back as first priority when business is back to normal.

Mr Suwitthaya said that labour officials working in areas where there are big industries such as automobile assembly and electronics to watch out for labour problem in light of economic slowdown and shrinking exports.

Instruction manual in Chinese

The world slow down has everybody in jitters , reading a write up Sunday about China's rising costs, Panasonic has relocated back to Japan and GE household goods manufacturing has gone home to the US, high wages and costs are to blame , interesting Thailand fared well in the wages area, if you're into below the poverty rate payments , relocations from China are going to the new kids on the block, Vietnam and Cambodia, Thailand is on the outer, reasons include company tax laws export regs and charges and sovereign risk..........................................coffee1.gif

Since when did skill become a verb? Skill them all!

Skilling training? Perhaps time to send whoever writes this drivel back to English training class.

This is merely a higher profile case of what has been quietly happening throughout Thai industry. With falling exports, slow GDP growth and poor domestic demand conditions, companies are cutting back - a few here, a few more there. This was predicted following the 'sudden change of administration' as economics is not up there in the curriculum at staff college. Before buying any excuses such as El Nino, world trade, Donald Trump etc, simply do a comparison of GDP growth rates across ASEAN

What it really means is that the Thai economy is sinking. Of course the global economy also drops but Toyota went through a lot of global economical problems but the Thai market for Toyota vehicles did very well.

I myself have not got a job offer for the past 6 months in Thailand as tourism numbers from the EU and Western countries is very low compared to last year. Thankfully we saved a ot of money for the rainy days so it doesn't affect me for another two or three years.

And general principle. Thailand likes to think everyone loves it, but there are many who would quite enjoy seeing Thailand sink without trace. Most of them are in ASEAN.

Winnie

Toyota are selling less of those Commuter Vans ,because of the crack down on illegal bus operators .

If the pay-out from Toyota is big enough, they could buy a job in the police - no skills needed except counting money; lifting heavy gold necklaces and closing bars.

Yeah Winnie, there is no love lost as far as Cambodia is concerned, they appointed their new senior military last week and referred to the military as protecting our borders from war mongering neighbours.

Makes me realize that I need to catch up my skilling as well .
