Defense Minister addresses issues with tank purchases from Ukraine

BANGKOK, 6 July 2016 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs has stated the purchase of military equipment must be made with consideration to value and performance to ensure public confidence.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan told a press gathering ahead of a meeting with the Ukraine Ambassador to Thailand that the government has begun an inquiry into Ukraine’s inability to deliver tanks purchased by the Kingdom.

He noted however that the administration understands that Ukraine has been experiencing turmoil as of late and that Ukraine understands that Thailand needed to transfer its order to China for expediency. He added that the commander of the Royal Thai Army has inspected the Chinese tanks himself and has affirmed their quality.

Gen Prawit reiterated that every ministry is being careful with its budget and expenses but pointed out the defense ministry must ensure it purchases are of the highest quality to secure public confidence.

Don't worry - with all the extra cash you'll siphon off the elderly Thais, there's plenty of money for whichever tanks you want.

What good will a roof over P' Somchai's head be if Laos invade? See! 'Thai really do rak Thai'.

Must be sort of sad for the Thai people to watch these idiotic

purchases. As they know full well that Thai army tanks are only

used on the Thai populace to control them. At least the

submarines the navy wants will be quietly rotting away at a pier

somewhere, the same fate as the fabled aircraft carrier.....

Is Thailand expecting a war soon or going to attack someone? With submarines and tanks they appear to be preparing. Although, with Chinese equipment, I really don't think they will have much affect. Thailand is never aw t war with anyone so why the BIG waste of money. It is not as if there are no poor in the country, and some very, very high ups (at the top) have so much money, it is obscene, considering the poverty.

Inspected Chinese tanks himself and has affirmed their quality. I can remember when

the last Chinese tanks they bought all developed cracks !,but as some people made a

lot of money out of it, I suppose thats just a technicality .

"Is Thailand expecting a war soon?"

Some people are warning of the possibility, yes.

Second hand Tanks? Why from such a dysfunctional state which heavily relied on Russia before independence? I would have thought Americans or Russian Tanks if not Chinese. ..I smell ROTTEN FISH there!!

With Un - elected DMP Pawtwit in charge of procurement cracks are already starting to emerge in the Tank purchase , wonder who's bright idea it was to go to the Ukraine for tanks....................................coffee1.gif

Military necessity, practicality, product quality, logistical support, price, etc...are never the determining factors in acquisitions like this.

The contract is written for and awarded to the source contractor who offers the most generous and user-friendly cash rebate incentives.

So it would appear the Ukrainian proposal meets criteria and promises to be suitably...rewarding.

Chinese junk that won't work in a year or so if your lucky. If I'm going to need tanks in my military conflict it makes sense to buy antiquated heavily modded Russian tank designs the Chinese have copied?

Reality is the tea money commission that validates such a poor choice...

There is absolutely no reason why Thailand shouldn't have tanks and submarines or any other military equipment it requires.

The way the world is going these days it's not a matter of 'if' but a matter of 'when' the world will be engaged in another world war.

Funny that.

The motorcycle taxi guy and I were having an interesting conversation about the quality of battle take the other day. He was a very well informed member of the public. Obviously.

Err the guy who originally ordered them for delivery in 2011? This is an outstanding order that was only partially filled.

Well, at least one could not expect Ukraine to be involved in a weapended conflict with Thailand, or any other ASEAN 'brother', ...while China, Thailand (well the RTN big brass...) wants to buy (an already obsolete version of) submarines from, might well start a military conflict with neighbouring countries in its obsessive expansionist, ...and imperialist (who would have thought in Mao's days China could ever get itself labelled an 'imperialist' power, it was accusing so many other countries of, hmm, dear old commies of yore?) quest of world domination... In the land of the blind one-eye is king, and no doubt a number of generals will get even more wealthy with this one, whether these tanks are any good, ...or not, was it just to balance the piles of money the admirals will make on those subs, no doubt as usefull as the RTN's airplane-less carrier... Is there ANYONE with ANY kind of 'power' worth ANY trust? The answer is...

somebody must be planning a coup, no other use for tanks in thailand

So, why do Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc have them?

...For the same reason as Thailand wanting more and newer ones, maybe? ...For a score of generals to get more wealthy?

And Thailand will play a significant role as a non-aligned nation?

How? By trying to run away faster than anyone else?

In a war, Thailand might just as well have sticks and stones.

We definitely need a dislike button. In an all out war these tanks and a sub would last about 5 minutes.
