The latest provincial tourism figures show efforts to establish Sihanoukville as a premiere beach destination may be paying off, with more tourists flocking to the coastal city than ever before.

Tourist arrivals increased nearly 17 per cent during the first half of the year, topping 1 million visits, according to Im Chantha, deputy director of Preah Sihanouk province’s tourism department.

“Tourism is generally flourishing because there are more transportation conveniences for visitors, including more options by air, boat and road,” she said yesterday.

Yes - very convenient. I went on one of the two domestic carriers websites listed in a linked article as providing air links to Snooky from PP. So I checked Cambodia Angkor Air to see what the prices and schedules were. US $77 single fare - OK that's not bad for the convenience. 3 flights a day - good. Flight time approx 12 to 24 hours. Flights via Ho Chi Min City. Wow - that'll work!

The other carrier, Bayon air - 80 bucks each way and 2.35 hours flight time (do props really go that slow?). Plus an hour to the airport. Plus check-in time. Plus disembark time.

Star rising? Star crashing back to earth I would say. But please do tell if i have it all wrong - surely it can't be this user-unfriendly? If true then back to the 5 hour struggle by road I guess - maybe 7 hours these days?

True, but $40 by a/c cab PP to Snooky, stop and get cold beers along the way and two or three can do it in comfort

Friend of mine that lives in PP says Snooky is rapidly falling by the wayside. Prices rising, many bars failing with one entire area going to be destroy by rich business man to build his section of beer bars (?). Ladies not as "friendly" as they were 10 years ago and the many Vietnamese ladies all gone. Soon to be the Pattaya of Cambodia, but more like Pattaya of today, not 15 years ago.

Certainly, things are not the way they were. However, I like Snooky's dichotomy--you can be drinking $0.35 beer in a $2/day hotel in the morning and sipping 12 year old George Dickel in a luxurious hi-roller casino at night--the in-between places are my preference.
