BANGKOK: -- One Thai worker died and another was injured when a huge night fire broke out at a large construction campsite housing more than 1,000 Thai and migrant workers of Italian-Thai Development Plc at Don Mueang north of Bangkok last night.

More than 450 rooms of the densely populated two-story makeshift row-houses were burnt to the ground after almost two hours of raging.

The fire started at about 9.30pm at the campsite on Pracha Uthit road and quickly spread as the houses were mostly built with woods and corrugated zinc sheets.

About 20 fire engines from Don Mueang fire station, Lat Yao station, Don Mueang Airport Authority, and Orporporlor Civil Defence volunteer office joined in fighting the blaze.

By due to strong wind, the fire could be stopped two hours later after almost all the makeshift row-houses on a five rai of land housing more than 1,000 workers, both local and migrant workers, and their families were completely gutted.

A Thai worker identified as Phanomphrai Chan-aksorn, 20, a resident of northeast Loei province died in the fire.

Five cars and pickup trucks and a number of motorcycles were also burnt in the huge fire.

Primary investigation quoted some workers as saying they heard an explosion and then the fire was seen.

But police that they have to question the exact cause.

As the huge fire had left over a thousand of workers homeless, local authorities have arranged temporary shelters near the gutted campsite and nearby temples for workers to stay until a new campsite is built.

Ital-Thai also arranged its vacant temporary campsite at Sam Khok for its workers to stay.

The workers mostly work on the electric train route project.

BANGKOK: -- The police have established arson as the probable cause of the huge fire that destroyed the camp that housed over a thousand workers of Italian-Thai Development Plc at Don Mueang last night.

Acting commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathavorn revealed arson as the cause after forensic police inspected the fire scene this morning and concluded it was an arson.

He said questioning of witnesses at the camp revealed that before the fire happend, there was a heated quarrel of a family living in one of the room at the camp.

Witnesses said the family had an alcohol drink and later engaged in a quarrel, and the fire was started.

The acting commissioner said the police are now hunting for the worker who started the fire.

The fire left over a thousand Thai and migrant workers placeless to stay.

Temporary accommodation are now arranged for them to live at temple ground, vacant camps of the company, and local administration offices’ ground.

One Thai worker died in the fire, and several vehicles were also damaged.
