I have an 11 year old daughter. She has Thai and US citizenship (and passports). I expect to take her to Europe later this year. I understand I'll need documentation to take her out of Thailand as her mom is not going to accompany us, but will I have any problems crossing borders in the Schengen zone? A friend of mine says I'll need every document under the sun, but I was under the impression borders were wide open. We'll be going to France and maybe Germany and Holland.

She should have no issues travelling within Europe just make sure you enter on the US passport for the duration of your stay as it is visa free for most places I believe.

Incidentally which papers are your friend referring to exactly ?

I'm not sure what he meant, but I think it was birth certificates, original and translated, registration of birth abroad, letter from mom in Thai and English. But I think he doesn't know what he's talking about.

If she is leaving Thailand on her Thai passport you not be allowed to travel without the express consent of the mother.

This normally involves the mother and daughter going to the local amphur, with your Pu Yai Ban and maybe one other.

The actual procedure may vary from area to area and some will question the necessity at all. However, it is your holiday and would be wise to cover yourself before getting to the airport.

In Europe there should be no issues traveling on the American passport.

I read the thread from last year about getting the documentation to leave. I think you're right that I need to cover myself, although people have very different experiences at the airport.

If you have the paperwork in order for a Thai minor to leave the country (parental consent of both parents, obviously if one parent is taking the kid that parent is fime with but there need to be paperwork what the other parent has given his/her permission). I have no clue on how all that works though. But if you have those docents in Englisg with that you should be fine when entering and exiting the Schengen border. Lots of countries are focussed on child abduction, human trafficking etc. so be sure you have some fancy documents that shows eveything is OK and no abduction is taking place.

Leave TH on the Thai passport (show the US passport if asked about being able to enter Europe), in Europe use the US passport to enter and exit. You can stay up to 90 days per half year, granted that the trip is affordable, that you have medical travel insurance etc.

I entered Netherlands last year with my son, different family name, and was taken to the side, register of stolen kids was checked. With consent form from mom, also checked at immigration Bangkok on departure, in the end entry allowed.
