I find that most places here have fairly old components which are hugely overpriced.

Is the tax really THAT much on PC components, most of which are manufactured in Asia anyway?

Tax on computer components in Thailand is low.

While pricing on high end goods is the most extreme, even your basic everyday hard drive made in Thailand purchased at your domestic outlet of choice costs more compared to buying the same drive exported to the USA and shipped to your doorstep there. Ditto for cameras and consumer electronics. It's been that way forever. And yes, it makes no sense but that's the way it is.
