PHETCHABUN: -- A 7-kilometre shortcut road to Phu Tab Berk hill in Phetchabun province will be destroyed after it was found to be substandard and unsafe.

This was revealed by the auditor-general Pisit Leelavachiropas after leading a team of officials to inspect the shortcut road to Phu Tab Berk.

The inspection was ordered after investigation that a section on this shortcut road from Ban Muengbang to Phu Tab Berk hill in Tambon Wangbarn of Lomkao district built on a 15-million baht state budget was substandard and unsafe to use.

Besides, it was not yet permitted to be built by the Forestry Department.

Drilling of the concrete surface at 16 locations on a 2 kilometres section showed different thickness of concrete surface.

Besides, the team also found erosions of concrete at several places on the road surface indicating the substandard mixture of cement and sand despite the fact that construction of the road just completed only recently.

The auditor-general said if construction is allowed to go ahead throughout the entire 7-kilometre length, more damages could be caused and would be a waste.

He said the Office of the Auditor-General would recommend relevant government agencies to halt the construction, and destroy the finished section because it is unsafe to use.

Besides he noticed that along the finished road section, land along the road were fenced, indicating that they have owners and resorts might be built.

He said authorities would also investigate and find out who were responsible for budget reimbursement of this road.

If they are found to support encroachment, they would be dealt with by laws.

You call that a road....looks more like a sidewalk to me. But hey, local construction companies and authorities probably already profited (stuffed envelopes) from the construction to date. And regarding the part about "the road will be destroyed" that probably just means we'll let the jungle reclaim it/overgrow it since all stuffed envelopes have already been handed out.

Looks like a concrete short cut mountain road to me. Suitable for motorbikes and hikers. Just block the entrances and exits. Or is there another lucrative contract available for the demolition crew?

Another waste of public funds,if Thais could put a stop to corruption,

the Country could be a much better place, with more Hospitals, better

Schools, support for the Elderly, the list goes on and on,but that money

ends up in the accounts of the minority, and unfortunately will not change

anytime soon.

Supervise road construction, hotel construction, school construction? why would we need to do that?

Total lack of accountability in Government offices has allowed the current situation in Phu Tab Berk and a thousand other places like it in Thailand to develop.

It is important to let officials know that their misdeeds will lead to impoverishment and loss of liberty otherwise this will continue ad infinitum.

The Dutch one-way cycling paths are wider than this short cut !!!

That's because they must meet EU standards. Cheaper here too, that's why we live here.
