A large Vietnamese ferry crashed into a Cambodian fishing boat off Ach Seh island on Saturday night in a maritime hit-and-run, with the ferry motoring away after damaging the back section of the long-boat. None of the five people on board the Cambodian boat were injured in the crash that happened during the ferry’s routine run transporting goods from Cambodia’s Koh Trol to the Vietnamese city if Hatieng, according to maritime and Kep provincial police.

Provincial police chief Oeng Sam Ol said although the crash site was not within his department’s jurisdiction, he had received a report about it. “It was a collision between a Vietnamese ferry and a Cambodian boat at the countries’ maritime border near Ach Seh island. There were five Cambodians fishing on the boat but no one was injured and all could make their way back to the shore,” Mr. Sam Ol said.

He added that maritime police were now attempting to negotiate with their Vietnamese counterparts to secure compensation for the owners of the Cambodian boat, who are Koh Poh residents. The National Police website reported on Sunday that the maritime border police’s unit 430 was in contact with Vietnamese border officials and would solve the compensation case soon.
