Foreign Ministry issues statement on China-Philippines maritime issue

BANGKOK, 13 July 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement affirming Thailand wants all issues in the South China Sea to be resolved through peaceful means and cooperation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued its statement following the International Tribunal in The Hague yesterday ruling in favor of the Philippines on the matter of navigation rights in the South China Sea, concluding China has no rights to claim areas of the open water. In its statement, the ministry pointed out Thailand’s desire to see peace, stability and development in the South China Sea and its wish for all issues in the area to be addressed through talks based on confidence and trust. It noted long standing ASEAN-China relations while affirming Thailand’s commitment to the ASEAN stance on the South China Sea issue, which is to maintain peace and mutual benefit.

Foreign Minister Don Poramudwinai later remarked he was not concerned that Thailand would be drawn into the issue and let on that the ASEAN collective would not be issuing a formal statement as each of its member countries have already made their declaration.

Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha meanwhile, reminded that Thailand is not directly involved in the matter and should not act unilaterally, confirming the Kingdom would adhere to ASEAN decisions on the issue.

China being a UN Permanent member, i hope it will respect the verdict and remove the illegal buildings and artificial Island. Because China have money it does not mean that super power. Only 7 tiny countries supported China for this cause, that too those countries don't have any sea boundary. China is buying every small country with money which are politically unstable to show like they are the super power and have support around the world.

China can be super power only when they respect the boundaries of other countries and stop encroaching the lands which are not belong to them. Also start respecting your own land, and don't exploit the form lands for trade and that causes lot of environmental issues.

It will be good for the world, if China is slowing down with economy and population.

Thailand has historically been good at hedging its bets. Whether to keep European colonial powers at bay; to protect itself from Imperial Japanese aggression; or to resist communist expansion in the region.

But, now its new best buddy may be expecting more than Thailand is prepared to commit by way of support.

It will be interesting to see if there is any fallout if it is perceived to be a fair-weather friend, or worse still, seen to be sympathetic to the other party in this dispute.

why Israel does not remove the illegal settlements from the west bank and respects the UN resolutions regarding withdrawing from the Golan heights ? or the UN resolutions are supposed to be issued against China only ?, China and Russia has the full right and sovereignty to build anything it wants anywhere in the world, as long as others are doing it too !!, we definitely live in the new era of imperialism and who got the military might imposes his will.

the US had illegally invaded Iraq on 2003 without any UN rulings or approval, now China has got the military might, it will simply copy what the US and its allies has been doing for years on weaker nations !!!

Basically the ministry said nothing. Sitting on the fence as always, just wanting their turn with the international microphone to be heard..

You are correct. Actually I am surprised knowing Thais they even said what they did. There was no need. It would have been far more 'diplomatic' for Thailand to say absolutely nothing. Mouths should just have kept shut. It achieves nothing and if a single word loses even something in the translation (going from Thai to English to Mandarin and Philipino) it could really p*** off either party for no reason at all.

And what about Turkey occupying part of Cyprus, an ignoring UN missives.

And what about Maroc occupying western Sahara, ignoring UN missives and forcefully removing UN staff from the area?

Oh, I forgot, Turkey and Maroc are islam countries, an Israel is Jewish, and nearly all resolutions of the UN are instigated by the 57 Islamic countries.

And what about China occupying Tibet and slowly erasing the culture?

And what about China ......feel free to pick any.

And what about Turkey killing Kurds by droves.

And.....

And.....

Selective blabbering!

yes I agree with your point but remember that Morocco and Turkey are an ally of Israel too, they want their share of the cake, for me the UN is joke, so best to close all these organizations and save the tax payer's money since they are almost useless to solve any conflicts, Saudi Arabia is overseeing an influential human rights panel for the United Nations clap2.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

The UN has one useful purpose. It concentrates foreign spies in a single location allowing the NSA and CIA to keep track of them.

History is a great teacher like the British , Spain, France, Japan, China and Russia who for 100's of year had colonies around the globe. France and Britain slicing up the Middle East after WW1. Russia who built the BERLIN WALL and took territory in all of Eastern Europe. The USA was founded on freedom of choice. We have been sucked into mistakes those countries made, we supported China when Japan was invading them. The French who screwed-up Vietnam and we got stuck after then withdrew in the late fifties letting the communist to take hold. Funny North KOREA and backer China. Russia supporting BARREL bombing in Syria. Does the name Crimea invasion mean anything? Building artificial island off the coast of other Asia countries with military force. Yes, the USA is every where BUT we are invited for security reasons and pay for that pledge of security. If you had read the Chinese response to the decision where they stated only CHINA is a true ASIA country. So, what is Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan or European countries? Name a country in which the USA HAS USED MILITARY FORCE AND TAKEN OVER A COUNTRY AND IT'S PEOPLE?

MoFA did more than say nothing.

Prayut says first that the ASEAN collective would not be issuing a formal statement as each of its member countries have already made their declaration. He then confirms that the Kingdom would adhere to ASEAN decisions on the issue.

The Prayut government has sent a message that it is not capable of responding directly to Chinese regional conflicts. Pure Chinese lap dog leadership.

Sorry but the US is the greatest threat to world peace, has started more wars. The US did not support China when it was invaded by Japan, which happened years before the US even entered the war (the Pacific war started in 1931). Vietnam was a war of choice and a disaster for the people of Vietnam who were subject to brutal massacres by the US forces, who used napalm on civilians and cancer causing Agent Orange in areas where civilians lived, it replaced a democratically elected government in Iran with a brutal Shah in order to steal the country's oil, more recently it has destroyed several countries Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya in its endless quest for world domination.

Iraq comes to mind.

I believe I read somewhere that since 1776, the US has invaded something like 70 nations, if you follow the definitions put out by the the UN, that to be considered an invasion the following criteria are met:

1. Violating the U.N. Charter, which says in Article 2, Paragraph 4 that member countries shall refrain "from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state."

2. Doesn't qualify as a permitted exception for the use of force under the U.N. Charter. The charter permits military action in the case of "self-defense if an armed attack occurs" or if the U.N. Security Council authorizes armed force.

3. Involves ground troops entering another country.

With the above in mind the US has invaded the following countries in the last 20 years:

1. Grenada

2. Panama

3. Iraq

Using other broader accepted definitions, i.e. namely, the seizure of territory by military force from the government of another country, regardless of motivation or justification

1 Kuwait

2.Afghanistan

3.Somalia

4.Haiti

5.Bosnia & Kosovo

6.Libya

And the above listings, don't include covert operations

if we use the last 20 years as a miles stone then in comparison with China and Russia

China: = 0, (if my facts are correct, Vietnam in 1979 was China's last invasion)

Russia

1. Czechoslovakia

2. Afghanistan

3. at a push lets say Ukraine (this one is debatable)

Having now lost at the UN-backed tribunal, China ought to consider discussing joint-development with the Philippines (and other claimants), indeed the new Philippino leader has offered this.

"Mr Duterte has adopted a more conciliatory approach than his predecessor Benigno Aquino, saying the Philippines would be willing to share natural resources with China in contested areas if the tribunal ruled in its favour."

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36791281

This setback might yet become a win-win result for them all, using the newly-built islands as bases to develop economic-resources in the SCS, to the benefit of both China and the several neighboring poorer countries..

And Thailand might support their ASEAN-friends, and also gain brownie-points with China, by encouraging this. wai2.gif

New news!

There is always someone in power. There always has been. All this babbling and complaining doesn't change that. Countries, empires, corporations, dictators....all take turns.

people are ruled. You are lucky you are probably too old to be drafted to fight.

Normal people don't make the decisions, so stay tuned....

Having now lost at the UN-backed tribunal,

question did the UK adhered to to the Julian Assange's UN ruling case ? or the court is meant for China only ?

Irrelevant, the key objective ought to be to carry development forward, but with some of the benefits reaching the poorer countries.

They seem willing to negotiate on this, as I linked, so all the sabre-rattling & colonial-era jingoism is unhelpful.

A naked power-grab, illegal according to the treaty which China signed-up to, does not bode well for future relations in this part of the world. wink.png
