"When you quit the job in Thailand and the employer has to cancel your visa,do we necessarily have to give them the original passport so that they can cancel the visa or can it be done on copy of the employee passport like without giving original passport?"

A visa cannot be canceled. You or your employer will need your passport to cancel your extension of stay (not a visa) at immigration. The extension stamp has to be canceled along with your re-entry permit if there is valid one in your passport.

Never give your passport to anyone.

That is a very general statement. How would you ever apply for a visa at a embassy or consulate if you did that. The majority will need your passport for at least a day to do it.

my question is - why your employer has to cancel anything??

i remember no one of my employers ever bothered with this issue, the only thing they care about is contract and HR formalities.

they even helped me with my flight tickets few months after i left them...

In most Thai consulates it takes two days to get a visa to enter Thailand.

Usually you will have to leave your passport with hem to get that visa, and return the next day to pick up the completed visa.

Usually they will give you a receipt for that passport, that shows they have your passport for processing of a visa.

The Vietnamese consulate in Bangkok keeps your passport for 48 hours to get a visa processed.

They give you a slip to show the police that they have your passport if you are askrd to show your passport.
