Is she a farang...?

Think we all know in LOS nobody follows the written word, I could tell you a story that you would....blink.png ....about a claim....

Farang, rule of thumb is you have 3 months to get a Thai license to satisfy your insurance company....But does anyone know what they are doing in said companies..whistling.gif

what farang?

You sure you speak English?

Why 3 month? I had many friend NEVER for dozen yaer had Thai DL. they have some times accidents. Insurance company pay... But htey NOT farang.. who is farang? HK guys with UK passport is farang?

Why you again give wrong information for people?

He is not giving wrong information, if your a tourist you can drive a car for 3 months after that you need a Thai driving license. If you don't you risk that you get no money in an accident. I had a Thai friend who had no license and he got no money after an accident, also know of a foreigner with a foreign license but longer as 90 days who did not get paid out after an accident.

Fact is 3 months is the general rule and after that your license is no longer valid as your no longer considered a tourist.

Valid licence or not does not even matter if the other party is at fault and has insurance.

Okay! For the sake of not having an argument lets say you are correct and it doesn't matter if the other guy is at fault. So now my question is that what if it is you at fault. After all an accident isn't planned and can happen to anyone at anytime.

So now lets say you ran a Red Light and by accident hit a Brand New Mercedes at the intersection causing great damage to both cars. The driver of that car and a passenger are also both hurt and taken to the hospital where the driver requires several weeks of hospital treatment. So are you still going to tell us that this insurance company will gladly pay up because you car is insured, even if the driver doesn't have a drivers licenses and legally shouldn't be driving? Or maybe he was drunk to at the time as that shouldn't matter either, since the car was insured and not the driver. Come On Man!

I don't know for sure as I am not a Thai lawyer but I have had claim dealings with insurance companies in the past and they are not famous for being understanding or overly generous. I am! But if I was a claims adjuster I still wouldn't give you any money for this either.

Listen mate just go along with your plans posting your plight on here is not the best idea. I think you have a decent plan and I'm sure in the end things will work out fine. Don't go worrying to much about this licence more important things for you right now with the baby. I if I was you would from now on keep my own council on your plans. On a forum like this you are asking for advise which some will give but you open yourself up to a lot of well let's say not very nice opinions.

Many who post scenario ideas don't really understand, insurance is one and they don't realize even yet that it's vehicles that are insured in Thailand so get your head around it, getting DL licence makes no difference, that will be on you alone.

Why only brand New Mercedes comes into accidents scenario is just so bloody silly.

People getting first class insurance whatever a private policy and clauses within it states it's extra, nevertheless without, you should still have the Thai government Compulsory Insurance which understand without a drawn out discussion of it's downsides, still covers the vehicle.

I should stay off road, unfortunately there is no taxi where we are living and it would cost a lot to bring one from Bangkok ( and we don't have money right now) just to get to the nearest bus. My wife is 8 months pregnant so she can't drop me with the motorbike, I have to go to Chonburi to get a job so I will try to travel at night hoping that with a low traffic there will be less risks.

It's a long story to justify why I don't have money and why I have to take this risk but I try my best, bought land, house and car in a short time, we are quite near to be ok.

I hope you know that poor planning on your part in the past doesn't justify your emergency now. You have had plenty of time to get your Drivers License here. Also moving to an area where you require a Drivers License right away to get to work, and neither you or your wife able to drive, is not good planning either. Especially now when your wife is due.

There is Private Places you can go to to get your Drivers License in Thailand which are not that expensive. My wife attended one of these places where she was able to write her Learners License Exam right away and start her Driver Training Road Test with an instructor the same day. There are courses on Saturdays, in case you work during the week, and there is also afternoon and evening driving for the road test.

I can't remember exactly right now but I think there was one day in road signs and safety instruction at which at the end of it she wrote her written exam. Then she needed 8 to 10 hour of road testing with an instructor over 4 or 5 days, to complete here course. At the Private School they passed her on both tests and all she had to do after that was take a signed paper to the Drivers License Office to get her Drivers License right away. She was able to do all this from start to finish in less than 2 weeks. If not for the weekends and holidays she could have done this in about a week.

I am sorry and I don't mean to talk down to you but I can't help feeling you had plenty of options and time in the past to not be in the situation your find yourself in now. I also feel you like living on the edge and that rules and laws are for other people..

If I was you I would probably drive to the bus stop and park my car there until I got back from work. I would drive my wife to the hospital if it was her time. I don't think too many police officers will bother you for a drivers license while your wife is sitting there and going through Labor Pains. But I would also get my Drivers License as soon as possible.

I won't read all, you have absolutely no idea about what is our situation and why we chose this way, it's a long story and to justify myself to you is probably a complete waste of time given that all you want is to judge (without knowing) and to feel you are better or more clever than other (or at least than me).

I never said anything about does not matter because the car is insured'. Can sometimes be the case, sometimes not, depends on the policy conditions.

If he himself is at fault it would depend on the insurance conditions, if any, nothing I can say about that without seeing those conditions.

I have first class insurance..BUT, not any driver, just two named, this means if anyone else drives it the insurance is void in the case of an accident...

Better read the coinditioins.

Standard would be: either higher deductable, or own party not covered, but 3rd party damage still covered to that party. The insurance company may come to get reimbursed by you.

Quite possible but do you want to take it to the test ? I agree that it SHOULD not matter and legally you are probably right but i still think its a vulnerable position.

This is taken to the test in Thailand on a regular basis.

If you don't have money then why on earth would you have bought a car?

that's because I bought a car that I'm short now and I bought a car because my wife is pregnant, can't keep going with the motorbike

@swissbie, still thanks for the idea, the second sentence was for doc46, I realize it was confusing. I'm walking and writing in same time eheh

fry30, no problem, i got it. Just logged in again. Another little advice; if you're wife will have to rush to the hospital to give birth and no neighbour is available, just drive your car and don't worry (but don't speed..). Local police won't even bother you in such a situation. As it looks like you're fully capable to drive a car, it would be the best solution. Some TV-members writing about a criminal act when driving without a Thai DL just don't get it. Obtaining a Thai DL doesn't mean to be able to drive a car decently, but still better to have one. Wish you good luck with the baby and the Thai DL.

Thanks Swissbie, if I really don't have choice I will do this

I don't know what is so clever in getting a Drivers License first and before a person buys a car an insures it, especially when nobody else in the family is going to drive it, and doubly especially when you move your 8th month pregnant wife out to an area where the nearest bus stop is 13 miles away. I would suspect 99.9% of the people here would do that first and get their license as this is just called plain "Common Sense".

Your reason in not having a Thai Drivers License is that it takes so much time to get and make it sound so difficult for you to get, after you let your normal license expire from back home. You make it sound like it is the same as getting a University Degree. It took me one day to get my Thai Drivers License here, and my wife with no license at all and no driving skills about a week. But for you it takes months full of excuses as you still don't have one yet.Even after you planned to buy a place and car and moved into this new place already.

Then without any good reason or excuse, except to tell people who don't agree with you that they don't know your circumstances, as you never told anyone what they are, you post that you plan to do something illegal and drive without a license and in hopes you get their blessing. You don't seem to get that many people here don't want trouble in their life and don''t like breaking the rules and laws, even if they don't agree with them. That they are not going to agree with you in breaking any law. Which upsets you.

Like in any country in the world, and like France if this is your home, you need a Drivers License to drive legally in that country (after 90 days) and just like Thailand. Thailand is different but not that different. You know this. So it makes no sense to me to ask for a blessing from people here for you breaking the law. Personally I would rather get into trouble back in my own country and before I did here, but that is just my personal opinion about that.

But as they say here: "Up-to-you! .

I'm not advocating to drive without driving license, that's absolutely wrong, I wanted to make only one trip because we are in a difficult situation.

I still prefer to walk 15 km that playing at the Russian roulette, I do understand how risky it is, especially for a farang, to drive without license.

I posted this yesterday, did you bother to read? nope, too focused on burning me at the stake.

Not arguing that the person hurt in the accident and is a legal driver and has full insurance isn't going to be covered by his insurance company or yours. But did you ever consider that this insurance company will pay out and then go after you for repayment? Happens all the time.

I posted this yesterday, did you bother to read? nope, too focused on burning me at the stake.

Your still looking for excuses instead of answers for your problems.

My wife never drove a car in her life so we decided that she should take a Driver Training Course in Udon Thani, which was also instructed and the written tests in English, if you choose. She completed her written test the first day (Learners License) which was about 6 hours classroom training. After she passed she was then allowed to do her practical driver training and went on the road with her instructor for about 2 hours a day and using there cars. Even when we had our own she could use as I drove her their. So no need to bring your car.

After 4 days of driver training at 2 hours a day (or maybe it was 5 days with Road Test) she passed her Drivers License Course. So in a little more than a week, as we were in no rush, and on her last day of the Road Test, she got a slip of paper from them claiming she passed all the tests. She took that to the Transport Office and got a Drivers License the same day. I think she had to do some one hour vision test and that was about it, and she didn't have to wait to do that. I can't remember the total cost of Driver Training except to say it wasn't that much. Maybe 2,500 Baht tops. So if she can do this in a week without any past driving experience or skills why can't you? Especially when you had a drivers license once before.

As for me it was a bit different. I went to a Driver Training Office in Pattaya which had a great bunch of people working their. They too offered the same service and also had cars you could use to get your license. I was a bit different as my License had also expired from Canada, but I also had different license from countries Thailand doesn't really accept on exchange. So they were not sure what I needed to do.

After conversation with the Transport Office they gave me a booklet in English which I studied for about an hour then wrote the written test on their computer in English. After I passed that short test I was finished. It was because of my past experience that I didn't have to do Driver Training or pass a Road Test. I was Grandfathered. I was out of their office by noon and before the day was finished I had my Thai Driver License for both a Motor Bike and Car.

So who says you can't do this also? Who says they won't Grandfather you as well with an expired drivers license? Who says you need to bring your own car? At worst you would have to do the Driver Training and in a week have a Drivers License. But if you push a little bit and are willing to pay the full price of the course you probably wouldn't have to do the Road Test, as you did have a valid license before and like me.

My Common Sense isn't narrow minded. I know because I did this and my wife also did this after me. I thought you came here for good advice and I gave that to you. You can have your Thai Drivers License in a week or even a day if you did what I said and did. It starts by you giving them a call in your area and asking questions. Tell them you need it right away and why. They are certainly going to help you a lot more then people here can.

Had you read my posts you would have seen this. That I was trying to help you. I am glad your life is going great for you. I would like to see you continue that way with your wife and new baby and not end up in some jail because of some stupid and careless mistake or listening to some idiots here thinking it is okay to break laws in Thailand as you probably won't get caught.

Stop making excuses! Get on the telephone now and get your Thai Drivers License and be legal. It is not that difficult no matter how long it was since you drove. I never drove on the other side of the road until I came here, and believe me that is a lot different. I haven't driven a Motor Bike in years. I am pretty sure I was Grandfathered into a 5 year license the first time, but to be honest I can't remember now as this was years ago and I renewed since then. .

You also didn't buy a car to sit their. You can be sure that going to Driver Training you don't have to wait a month as I just popped in and got mine the same day. You also might be able to get your license the same day, and like I did. You will never know until you try. Go their with some money with your old license and tell them your story and see what happens next. A few thousand should do it.

I won't read all, you have absolutely no idea about what is our situation and why we chose this way, it's a long story and to justify myself to you is probably a complete waste of time given that all you want is to judge (without knowing) and to feel you are better or more clever than other (or at least than me).

After 5 years without driving I chose to wait to get the car to drive it a bit on a parking to refresh myself before passing the exam, add to this that they ask us to come with our car to pass the exam...

Your "common sense" is just a "narrow mind"

I wish I could say thanks for your help or tips but it is clear that you are not here to help.

You didn't even read what I wrote previously, you are completely out of subject.

On top of this, everything is probably going to go smoothly in a happy manner and as per the law. Should I be sorry for you?

I'm not advocating to drive without driving license, that's absolutely wrong, I wanted to make only one trip because we are in a difficult situation.

I still prefer to walk 15 km that playing at the Russian roulette, I do understand how risky it is, especially for a farang, to drive without license.

I posted this yesterday, did you bother to read? nope, too focused on burning me at the stake.

The op asked a question, you can not or do not want to answer, and start moralising in stead.

For goodness sake man give it a rest. The OP has his reasons I'm sure but doesn't want to quite rightly share them on here. You are just out to be holier than thou fair enough but enough is enough. He said yesterday he was wrong and will not drive till he gets a licence. His reasons for waiting are entirely his reasons so please with all due respect BUTT out stop moralising and have a beer

I have first class insurance..BUT, not any driver, just two named, this means if anyone else drives it the insurance is void in the case of an accident...

Are you sure about that?? My insurance company said anyone can drive my truck , I asked because allot of time I would

let my workers use it to go pick stuff up.

also I was driving my friends car and had an accident I only had a US license at the time as it was before I moved to Thailand.

It was my fault as it was raining and I was on the bridge on the steel part so when I hit my brakes I just slid right into the SUV in front of me. The police came

and insurance guys showed up and took care of everything. The person I hit was nice, the cops we really good helped me move the car, no ticket nothing from

the police.

Then again this is Thailand what happens one time is not proof the same thing will happen next time. All depend on the mood of the person, how they understand the laws etc.

Depends on the policy. All drivers is standard, but named drivers an option that offers discount.

goldbuggy you are a piece of work, I explained that I have no money right now (thanks god I'm not poor or I would get 10 pages of insults to say how irresponsible it is to be poor...) and you said go there with some money...

Anyway all your replies are complete non sense, I have no idea why you are on this thread, you are even not reading it.

I asked a question and I got answers, I wanted to know the risk in taking the car without license because I wanted to make a single trip.

Do I have to explain you from the day I was born why I made every of my choices? and anyway you would even not understand the answers.

The probably less wisest thing I'm doing is to answer to you.

@deepinthailand and stevenl, thanks for your support and answers.

I think this thread can be closed.
