PHUKET: Patong Municipality officials may have solved some of the mystery surrounding the areas ongoing floods after digging up drainage pipes to find them blocked with tyres, electrical cables and general everyday rubbish.

However, another part of the problem was that the drainage pipes had not been properly connected.

Mayor Chalermluck Kepsap led a team to investigate Patong’s drainage problems at the Omsin (GSB) Junction on Phrameita Rd on Thursday (July14) after residents complained of foul smells and water being trapped in the area.
Using a backhoe, the drains were dug and various items including an old tyre, electrical wires, plastic and water bottles were found to be clogging the pipes.
Mayor Chalermluk told The Phuket News yesterday (July 15), “We had to open the drainpipe to see why the rain water would not drain on Phrameita Rd. It turned out that the problem was not the old pipe, but was that a lot of rubbish had entered the drainage system.

Continue to educate the shop owners and households to put the rubbish in the bins and have a regular rubbish removal system in place it can work even in Thailand.

It is not an act of ignorance, but an act of selfishness and laziness. Common to see in those double and triple parking of vehicles at the market.

Education will not work nor change a hardened heart.

"However, another part of the problem was that the drainage pipes had not been properly connected."

So, I'm sure the city counsel will hold the contractor responsible to correct the problems?

The same problems for over the fourty years that I have been going there. Also the Thai engineers have no Idea about laying a drainage ditch. Many of the ditches are "LEVEL" and do not DRAIN.! When laying a ditch in a beach area known for a lot of sand, You should finish the work or block the Drainage pipes before leaving the job unfinished for two months or more as they fill up with sand What dummies.

Patong Muncipality might start by instructing their employees not to sweep debris into the sewers when cleaning up the roadside.

I don't know how many times I've seen the teams of ladies in their dayglo vests out on Nanai Rd using their brooms to brush leaves and debris into the sewer instead of bagging it up and hauling it away.
