Thai students win medals at IPhO in Switzerland

BANGKOK, 19 July 2016 (NNT) - Thai students have won two gold and three silver medals at the 47th International Physics Olympiads (IPhO) in Switzerland.

Director of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) Pornpan Waitayangkoon revealed that five students were selected from the annual 'International Mathematics and Science Olympiad Thailand' to compete in the IPhO, which was held from July 11th - 17th in Zurich, Switzerland. The five students earned two gold and three silver medals.

The IPST Director hoped the competition would raise awareness among Thai students about the importance of science and mathematics and inspire them to pursue a career in these fields. More than 88 students from 398 countries around the world took part in the IPhO this year.

I wonder which schools these winners came from? I would bet that they came from International Schools, as the Thai Science Curriculum is a mess.

BTW, I am a science teacher and trying to actually teach the students something while following the Thai Science Curriculum is a tricky balancing act at best.

Wouldn't it be nice if the students' names were mentioned?

It seems that this is a written exam and all students who score over a certain level, get either a gold medal, or a silver medal, or bronze medal. There were 47 gold medals awarded, 74 silver, and 95 Bronze and then numerous Honorable Mentions.

The Thais on the list came in number 12th, gold, tied for 17th, gold, 57th, silver and 75th silver ...(that leaves one student missing according to the article, or

I just can't see them on the list.)

Last week 8 times gold on the robots in germany, they had much gold in Indonesia last week, now this...

They win a lot of gold, so much that i start to wonder what all those competitions are since i had never heard of them before.

Now please beat the solar-challenge for students and i will respect thai universities forever. Win the solar-race through Australia!

Where is a certain member with the name of a famous bear to piss all over this accomplishment as has been done in another.

The IPhO is organised by the quite prestigious University of Zürich. Participants are students from what Thai call Mathayom. (Not university students).

Maybe they use base 5 numbering system or something of that ilk.....

These kids did pretty good. Considering the people they beat they did OK in my books.

The truth is, I was so devastated by your incisive insight, remarkable debating prowess, and general good-guy-ness on the last occasion the ties tried to pretend to be world-beaters in mathematics, that I just couldn't just face loss of dignity which would flow from another thrashing at your hands.

Besides, even the most incompetent football team, still needs one or two cheer-leaders, even if they're only the ones that look like blokes.

The fact that you haven't heard of the International Science Olympiads is more a reflection of you than anything else to be honest.

That's sure possible, my homecountry only wins the solar-race every year and all the rest is not in the news so we have no idea they exist.

But is it normal for universities to reach out loads of golden medals? In Europe only number #1 gets gold and nobody else. Also i had never heard of this university, in fact we never hear any news from Switzerland except for hidden bankaccounts.
