Check out www.phuketgazette.com (the classified section, wheels and motors)

If possible, avoid rental bikes.

Pay at the registration office when the green book is ok for title transfer.

phuket twon is about the cheapest to find them as there are less farangs shopping there

old suzuki crystal etc with green books are about 5 to 6k

honda dreams are about 6 to 9 k depending on if they have electric start etc

I have found the ones that are advertised in Phuket Gazette etc to invariably be vastly overpriced but they are aimed a farang market :o

small bike repair shops in town nearly always ahve one or two for sale and quite often with the "novelty" factor of dealing with a farang they forget to try and rip you off for the price

for example i got 2 honda dreams, both with electric starts in good running order all though the paint on one is a bit faded. total cost inc delivery of them was 11k for both. with green books as well

best advice is to shop around in the non farang areas. a tatty suzuki crystal with green book is only worth about 3k so you can get cheap runners.

Hi,

Is it possible as a tourist to buy a bike? I´m staying for 3 month and think it´s cheaper to buy instead of hire. And what do I do with the bike when I leave`? :o

Posted
lots do, just don't register it to yourself and flog it when you leave

3000 a month rental 9k

crap but still goes bike 6 k

sell for 5 etc when you go :o

Ok, but who do I register it to. I´m travel around.

Barely worth it in my opinion. Might as well rent a new bike, fully insured for the pennies you re going to save. You dont have all the aggro of selling it then.

2nd hand bike market in Phuket is almost none existant. You would think there would be hundreds if not thousands up for sale, or even a weekly market. But no. Thais dont really like buying much second hand stuff. They need new stuff to impress their friends.

There is a place in phuket town near Natural restaurant that does sell repo'd bikes but a tourist cant register them. YOu need a work permit i think.

Good Luck

Can you provide any address in phuket town where to buy them, and what procedure and where to

go for green book? I'm tourist but stay few months usually

The dealers won't sell new bikes to tourists.

You can buy used ones with a tourist visa.

If you only need one for 3 months you're better off renting. If you shop around you can get a fairly new machine for 3000 a month.

what a usless reply. Why did you bother to post?

If I can buy 2nd hand for 9,000 Bhat in working condition, I can give it out for free to someone

when i leave at least

Thats a bit harsh isnt it BKK Dude............

I think Kasi was just pointing out that renting for 3 months is a better option than buying.

Look guys - the kinda bike you re gonna get for 9,000 baht is gonna be what you would politely call a "fixer upper" or more realistically a "knackered old dog"

Its gonna be old. genuinly, it may not make it up some of the larger hills in Phuket at all, even with just one person riding it. Plus, how is a tourist gonna insure and tax it? Its just hassle.

A rental will be quite new, the shop should service it for you, it certainly should be taxed and insured and if it aint then just go to a rental shop that is better.

For 3 months on a tourist visa its a no-brainer. Just rent.

There are a few second hand bikes in dealers shops. And i mean a very few. And the prices are a joke. How about 35,000 for a 2 year old bike? A new one is only 45,000.

thanks for the informative reply

your experience is based on buy how many used bikes that are "fixer uppers" to be exact 1,2 20??

yes it is easy to go an rent a newsih bike for 3k a month, and by the way you are VERY unlikely to get anything other than the legallyrequired MINIMUM amount of insurance.

3k buys you a "fixer upper"

6- 9 K buys you a decent Honda dream etc that will run and run

10-15k newer model dreams

it is fun shopping for the bike, they "fit in" better than the usual farang on the red plated bikes and its a bit of fun....

not going up hills?? well if you are that fat by a two stroke with more power :D

seriously though how can you tell what a bike is like from your computer

i have bought (on phuket)

3 Honda Dreams - most expensive 6k

1 Suzuki 4 stroke - 5 K

1 Suzuki 2 stroke - 5 k

The only one that is a dog is the 2 stroke but then i was fully aware of that when i bought it. NONE of the dreams have had any problems at all and they get used every day. The 4 stroke suzukis clutch is now on the way out after 9 months of abuse with a grossly overlaod side car on it :o

Maybe sometime people just dont want to bethe sterotypical farang that buys / rents a new bike / car / house etc

Lot's of luck finding a good working bike for 9000 baht

A decent honda wave or dream goes for between 15000-20000.

Why would you ask a for advice here if your so smart? Go find out for yourself on your own.

What is your time worth? (apparently not much!)

Oh yea and have fun when you have to take your 9000 baht bike in for repairs. Be sure to bring some vaseline from home, you will need it!

clearly you haven't shopped around lately!

A tourist here on a 60 day visa just won't have the knowledge to get it done! Are you offering to hold his hand?

These are deals you happen upon by being here a while bought from depressed sellers usually, certainly not shopped from used dealers.

If he has time he can wait for one of the "smart guy buys" to come along!

Perhaps 3 months will be long enough.

We all can't be smart and Scottish at the same time. I have to admit you are a gifted one!

Why don't you sell him one of yours for 9000?

I've got a couple of Hondas I could help him with, his "useless" response kind of soured that idea.

Anyway I prefer to keep a couple of nice spare scooters around for visiting friends and family.

thanks for the sarcasm but the smart bit actually refers to a car not me :D

anyway, just cos you have been "humped" a few times by dealers why do you assume that everyone else will?

why do you assume a tourist wouldn't know here to look for bikes. its not hard - drive along pretty much any road in Phuket town and stop when you see a "bike workshop" that has a couple of bikes outside.

ask how much they are

repeats as necessary :o

Hopefully not a german car! :D

I have 2 decades of experience working both sides of the fence.

There was a saying we used when we worked the car auctions:

"Not every car at the auction is bad, but every bad car is at the auction".

This applies to any used vehicle which is for sale. They aren't all bad but all the bad ones are for sale!

why do you assume a tourist wouldn't know here to look for bikes. its not hard - drive along pretty much any road in Phuket town and stop when you see a "bike workshop" that has a couple of bikes outside.

I only assume this because I've shopped around quite a bit for bikes here and have found the supply of good one at good prices very limited. I've only been here 3 years so my experience is limited.

I've made several good used vehicle buys but they were from individuals who were leaving town.

I've seen plenty of used waves and dreams in the 15-20K range that would make me go buy a new one instead. A new wave 100 is just 36K.

The proverbial 9000 baht "dreams" are out there. I'm just saying from my limited experience; that "dream" is hard to catch.

Doesn't 'ecosse' mean a race-car or a race team? Wasn't there a Scuderia Ecosse in the 1960's? Did Archie Scott-Brown race a D Jaguar for them? Am I senile yet? Am I at least off topic yet? :D

"Ecosse" is french for Scotland.

Vive l'Ecosse!

Being half scot myself! :D:o:D

remarkable how poorly educated "peacenicks" are!

Here's the difficulty.

You buy a bike for 9k - if you re lucky. I will bow to other posters eperience as i have only been here 3 years and have only bought 3 bikes in that time.

When its time to go home, you need to sell it either on the last day of your visit, or be bikeless for a few days.

You have all the aggravation of the green book, insurance and tax from the ministry of slow transport etc etc.

We are talking pennies here mate. Rent a revvy new one for 3 k a month. It will be sexy and reliable. You hand it in the day you leave. No worries.

Seriously, i m not making assumptions, but if you are thinking of picking up chicks, they arent gonna be impressed when you turn up on some old clunker that their granny recently sold. Thai people are VERY materialistic, in my short experience anyway.

Stopping off at street side bike repair shops is askin for trouble for someone new in the country. They will look at your lilly white legs with no exhaust burns on them, eye up your bulging wallet, ask you how long you ve been here - and you answer them truthfully. Then they will sell you a dog of a bike for a whole load of money.

Why even bother................

I looked at heaps of bikes 6 months ago for the missus. All <deleted>. For 15k more you can get a brand new one. I'm not ######ing about trying to save 200 quid on on new versus old. Would you do that back home? Buy a used car for 75 percent of the price of a new one when the used one is 5 years old? Would you ######.

Dont be so daft. Just rent a nice Mio or summat and go chase some tail.

ah, of course. Someone posts about coming to Thailand for three months so they must be looking for "chicks" :o

:D Either chicks, guys or ladyboys.

I agree with markg that no self respecting thai girl will want to be seen on a 9000 baht honda dream!

To impress the ladies you gotta have the Phantom! :D
