Juries in courts is a great tenet of democracy? My country (Netherlands) is without a doubt a true democracy. Yet it has no jury system.

I am happy it has not. I can't imagine being tried by amateur judges.

This is a demonstration of one of the attacks. Fully informed juries are not in abundance and there is a reason for this. Don't forget with really competent lawyers and juries that are fully informed presided over by a skilled judge, it spreads the possiblitiy of democratic judgement over a larger field.

So if you accuse somebody of murder and they did it, does the constitute defamation? By that standard isn't every court that accuses a criminal quilty of this? Surely saying somebody is a rapist is going to be harmful to them? Next time I get arrested I am suing the Police for saying bad things about me

In most jurisdictions there's a requirement of public good as well. If the material is true but does not benefit the public then you can still be done for defamation. Not sure if this is the case in thailand though.

I have served on American juries, both county and federal. All members of juries I was on took duty seriously and fairly.

If that is the form of torture the Thai Army dishes out to it's own kind then ordinary citizens.need to be very very concerned as to what might happen to them if they dare upset the military and it's masters.

Terrible story. But its just another story in the long list of injustices in Thailand. I have spent enough time in Thailand to know i could not live here. My Thai wife says she could not protect me in Thailand. Thus the home country is not so bad is it?

You will probably find that the majority of those in charge who seem to sanction this behaviour were only recently shaken out of a tree. They certainly are not thinking passionate humans.
