hi all if we were to go to anywhere in thailand in september where would the best place to go [weather wise] for a beach holiday

Any where you like. Were already in rainy season. If you don't like rain, plan on staying home. Personally rainy season is my favorite. It rarely rains all day. Then when it does clear up it's gorgeous.

Statistically the western side of the gulf (Hua Hin and southward) has less rain than other beach destinations.

Don't go southwest (Andaman coast, Phuket et.al.). Absolutely soaked.

In early September Ko Samui could be OK, but it's a gamble as the rain increases steeply towards October/November.

Generally: the earlier in September the better.
