Timber Truck Seized in Kratie

Featured Replies

A police squad working with government officials in Kratie province stopped a truck loaded full of luxury wood in Chet Borei’s Changkrang village on Saturday afternoon. The truck was headed toward Tbong Khmum and Prey Veng provinces, according to officials at the scene.

Provincial military police chief San Bunthan confirmed that they worked with forestry administration officials to catch the truck, but could not give the exact amount of wood confiscated because the report was with members of the forestry administration team. An official who spoke to Khmer Times yesterday said police seized about seven cubic meters of wood, and despite questioning the driver, were still unsure about the source of the timber.

“Seven cubic meters of woods were seized and it is now being kept temporarily for further court procedures,” said Mey Vuthy, chief of cantonment at the forestry administration in Thmor Kre. Early in June, Environment Minister Say Samal claimed illegal logging and timber exports in Cambodia had ended, despite evidence that the trade was not only continuing, but increasing.
