BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has brushed aside a suggestion by former deputy prime minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul that he should take over from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha in case the draft constitution fails in the August 7 referendum.

General Prawit who is in charge of security affairs said that there is no need for Prime Minister Prayut to be held accountable for the draft charter’s failure by resigning because he is not responsible for staging the referendum.

Also, he explained that the result of the referendum – whether the draft charter is voted down or approved – will have no effect whatsoever on the election which will go ahead in accordance with the political roadmap.

As for himself, General Prawit maintained that he had no ambition to become the next prime minister nor is he fit to become one and his relationship with General Prayut remains strong.

The deputy prime minister noted that the instruction given to all provincial governors by the interior permanent secretary to be on the alert and to maintain peace and order during the leadup to the referendum this coming Sunday is just a normal procedure.

Hhmm,  he certainly gets himself in the news regularly and has a lot to say which isn't always on the same page as the PM.

Neither are what I would call  '  photogenic ' or sparkling orators.    If he took over it would be hard to tell the difference.

The "Prime MInister" is only responsible for staging one thing, ... so far...

Another coup in the wind?

History certainly has plenty of examples of counter coups coming from those within the original one.
