Phahon Yothin Police stop motorcycles from using flyover

BANGKOK, 2 August 2016 (NNT) - Phahon Yothin police have set up a checkpoint to stop motorcycles from using the overpass at Ratchayothin intersection, after many motorcyclists were found breaking the law.

The Ratchayothin overpass is among 39 bridges across Bangkok that strictly bans motorcycles. The checkpoint was set up by Phahon Yothin Metropolitan Police Station to impose maximum fines on the illegal use of the overpass.

The police also educated motorcyclists about possible dangers that could happen when motorcycles and larger vehicles are on the same flyover.

The police checkpoint is only set up during rush hour to relieve traffic congestion around the bridge, which is located on Ratchadaphisek road. Traffic police will also be deployed throughout the day to prevent any motorcycles from using it.

It is an interesting news article in so much as it is one heck of a trip to avoid the flyover if travelling down Rachada. You would have to turn left at the lights at Ratchayothin intersection onto Phaholyothin and do a U-turn close to Kasetsart before heading all the way back to Ratchayothin to make a left turn back onto Rachada.

As it is, motorcyclists will probably go part way up Phaholyothin and make an illegal turn somewhere between the skytrain construction, which is actually more dangerous than riding across a flyover.

Oh well ...
