That's him! The Indian passenger no taxi driver wanted in their cab

BANGKOK: -- Lumpini police have arrested an Indian man who they say was making a living conning taxi drivers out of money in the Nana area of Sukhumvit Road.

 

Several taxi drivers went to the station to make it plain- yes, that was him. Drivers said that he used the ruse of showing a fistful of dollars saying he had no Thai money, reported Thairath. 

 

He would borrow Thai cash to pretend to buy things on journeys then later run off when it looked like he was going to exchange his dollars.

 

Aziz Abdul, 29, denied involvement but police have charged him. He was arrested in the Nana area of Sukhumvit on Wednesday.

 

Driver Seksan Phumeebun, 48, said that he picked up Abdul on August 1st near Central Chitlom and was asked to take him to the airport. 

 

He drove off down towards Sukhumvit and when they got to the Nana area he asked to borrow 300 baht to buy something in 7/11. 

 

He got back in then further down the road asked to borrow 1,500 baht to buy some medicine - he produced a fistful of dollars saying he had no Thai money. 

 

Again he got back in but when the taxi was stopped at Soi 11 he opened the door and ran off.

 

Cabbie Pairot Khamket, 37, recounted a similar tale from back in February. He picked up Abdul from Soi 3 and was asked to go to Suvarnabhumi. When they got to Robinsons (Soi 19) he showed a handful of dollars and asked to borrow 1,000 baht to buy something. 

 

He got back in then asked to get out at Terminal 21 to change his dollars at a booth. He didn't return again.

 

Pairot said that a group of taxi drivers on the Line application said that this had happened at least 20 times in the area.

 

Despite the Indian man's denials Lumpini police felt they had sufficient evidence and Abdul was prosecuted.

How many practice takes before they were satisfied this was the shot to go with  ?

I wonder what happens to taxi drivers who get screwed over all the time. Do they just smile and be happy? Maybe they get some anger in them.

     Yes it is. When I was in Mumbai I hired a full time guide (Muslim) to show me around. His name was Abdul Aziz.

Sounds like a scam that Thai taxi drivers would pull.

Another example, over many years I've heard of Indians (and no doubt others) who take a taxi with meter, then get out at the destination and say to the driver 'meter says 50Baht but traffic not bad at the moment so I will pay you 40Baht' and do so, and then disappear.

They won't get screwed over all the time, they are not stupid. I'm amazed he even could borrough 1500 baht from the driver without giving him a pack of $.

And why the taxi's didn't call the police and report him? They are their best friends.

there is always one person who seems unaware that citizenship, ethnicity, and names are not necessarily related.

Why didn't the taxi drivers just stop at a money exchange place and tell him to change the dollars there?

 

I know the story says in one case he went into terminal 21 to do so but why there?

 

Take him somewhere else where you can watch him, it's not as if there are plenty of money exchange booths in the area the story refers to.

 

Mind I guess he'd just run off when he got out but still...

It is good all three are pointing at the same guy, since I would not have spotted the culprit otherwise.

The middle guys hand is slightly lower than the other two pointers so I am going to award 9.5 for the point. All in all a good triple point, well synchronised .

Abdul Aziz is a name often given to Indian Muslims. My wife's borther was called Abdul Aziz and he was a Singaporean with roots to India.

 

As for the <snap> gladly they removed hi from the streets of Bangkok.

difficult to confirm either way but in this globalized world  names have crossed many borders.

there is no limit to human ingenuity - so many different ways to con people but such people are devoid of morals and they think nothing of depriving others of their hard earned resources.

 

the right place for them is away from the society.

Am happy to see that there is someone who is paying back bkk kind taxi drivers????indeed the guy is Indian &  the correct name should be Abdul Aziz and not as stated.For our friend who said the guy is not indian because of his name  "India's Muslim Pop stands at 14.2%"

I would recognize that guy anywhere. Terrible case of advanced pixelation.

One thing that confuses me is that why would the cab drivers lend him money? Some of them won't even go by the meter and they actually lent him money.
