One killed and two cops injured when militants attacked a ballot carrying truck

PATTANI: -- Suspected militants detonated a roadside bomb aimed at a convoy carrying ballot boxes to Pattani’s Sai Buri district, killing one a school official and injuring two policemen on Sunday afternoon.

Police said that a gas cylinder containing explosives was placed by suspected militants on the roadside of a local road leading to Ban Saemoh, Tambon Sabing of Sai Buri district where a referendum polling unit was situated.

After the vote count at the polling unit was completed, the polling box was loaded on a pickup truck to be delivered to Sai Buri district office. As the pickup truck and a few escort vehicles left the village and passed through the spot where the homemade bomb was placed, suspected militants who appeared to be waiting there detonated the explosive device.

The explosion killed Arasee Mahana, a school official, who helped out election officials at the polling unit. Two policemen who escorted the convoy were also injured.
